Completely dishonest transaction
Before my most recent trip to Lakewood Ford for vehicle maintenance, I stopped in and had some minor work done, which is when they suggested I get my transmission flushed as part of my upcoming 90,000 mile service. I told them I would do so when my service came up in just a couple of months and asked for a quote. At the time, the 90,000 mile service was about $300 and the transmission flush was about $200, given their pricing board and the info I was given by the tech I dealt with, so I planned for about a $600 visit.

Between then and the last time I brought my vehicle in, I received a 10% off my next service coupon. I planned to bring my vehicle in just a week after the coupon was set to expire, so I called ahead and asked if they would still honor the coupon since I was making my appointment before it expired and I was told absolutely - to bring it in and they would take care of it.

On the day of my service, I brought my vehicle in and dropped it off. I also went over the coupon promise with the same service person who I had spoke with on the phone, who guarenteed they would honor the 10% discount coupon. I also reviewed the services being performed with him because I had just recently gotten an oil change and wasnt due for several months. I specifically asked if the oil change attributed to any cost in the service and was told no, that it was part of the package and excluding it wouldnt change the pricing at all, so I allowed them to go ahead with it anyway.

I received a call mid-way through the service and was told that they would have to change out some parts (spark plugs maybe) that seemed like they should have been included as part of the service and that it was going to cost a bit extra. I was annoyed, but seeing as to how they already had my vehicle, it was the only day I had available to do this much needed service, I submit to this idea and allowed them to do the work. I didn't have an alternative option.

When I went to pick up my car, "a bit over" turned into nearly double the original quoted price...the bill was about $1,000, which included an itemized price for a premium oil change - which I had told them I didnt want if it could be removed and didn't need, and it did not include any discount - as we had discussed on multiple occasions.

When I brought up the discount to the service person who had promised it to me, he said that he couldn't give me 10% off my bill, he would have to put it onto their new frequent customer card program and that I would be able to redeem the funds on my next visit. Given that 10% of the $1000 bill was about $100, I said fine...assuming that it was at least two more oil changes...I could be ok with that. Until I discovered that he was only giving me 5% back because that was the current promotion for the card.

Aside from the additional charges above their initial quote for standard tune-up parts, the service department essentially charged me an extra $50 for services I expressly stated I didnt want if they would cost me extra, and then took away about $50 in discounts they had promised.

I couldnt have been more swindled by the Lakewood Ford service department during this visit. Dave Alger is the service advisor I dealt with and I would never do business with him again. You are only as good as your word, and that day his word was absolutely no good.

While my purchasing experience at Lakewood Ford was great - I would never recommend their service department. They are not honest nor trustworthy.

My complimentary first oil change
I took my car in for its first oil change and Tim was very cordial. He noted my request to check the spare tire pressure on the work order, but the tech apparently didn't notice it. The spot on the form having to do with the spare was not checked and when I checked it at home it had about 50 pounds of pressure. Other than that, everything went fine and quickly enough.
