Too Expensive
I went to Rusty’s Garage for the first time to give the air conditioner in my 2013 VW a boost. The recharge used $14.39 worth of Freon, and Rusty’s charged me $304.07 in labor charges, plus shop and hazardous materials fees for a grand total of $337.59.
When I learned that other mechanics in the area charge well over half for the same service, I called Rusty’s and was told that’s what they charge for labor and that there was no mistake.
The employees are polite, the shop dog is cute, but those labor charges are way too high, and I won’t take my car to Rusty’s Garage again.

thank you for taking the time to voice your concern...it’s really the only way we can improve on areas that need it. First of all I’m sorry for any bad taste we left in your mouth about Rusty’s Garage.  In this instance this is poor communication on our part and 100% our fault. And my technician thought he had two separate items to address and the additional $140 was for diagnosis of two items and then the $160 was for the air-conditioning service. That was not conveyed to you properly, if at all.  So please know we are as unhappy with the customer being surprised by price as the customer is. We are happy to refund any portion of this ticket that was not conveyed to you upfront. Again please except our apologies and know that we wish to make every customer very happy with our service.

Sincerely

Dishonest about problem
Where do I start?!?! They lied about parts that needed replaced. They claimed my ball joint was bad and that it burned up my wheel speed sensor. I told this to a mechanic friend of mine who said that is complete BS and that the ball joint wouldn't do that. He sent me to another place who found the issue quicker, showed me pictures as to why Rusty's was full of it, and replaced the part quicker. Oh.... they fixed the actual problem for $300 less than Rusty's.

I'm now wondering if Rusty's even replaced the parts they claimed they did and whether they even needed replaced.

And to top it all off, my truck broke down this morning and it was the wheel barring, not the entire "ball joint hub & wheel speed sensor". My guess is they would have replaced the wrong parts, or only the actual barring and still charged me the full assembly price.

2nd top it all off, they worked on my rear brakes and now the parking break is acting up.
Pat D. from Rusty's Garage responded on 05/08/2017

OK, Let's take this one item at a time. 1st, we don't lie. And I also agree with your mechanic friend about ball joints, they probably won't cause a speed sensor to "burn up". But we never said anything about your ball joints. We told you that your hub bearing is bad, noisy and in need of replacement. We also said that the bearing, not the ball joint, could burn up the wheel speed sensor (a part of the hub). I gave you a quote for a hub bearing, (Timken parts and labor $580) you declined the work...that's completely your prerogative. 2nd, You dropped off complaining of rear brake noise. Our initial test drive confirmed the brake noise back there and we didn't hear the severity of the front noise then, until we fixed the rear brakes and test drove again. But that point is mute because we had already quoted you the front wheel bearing repair. these problems are progressive. The fact that the front bearing worsened to the point of "must repair now status" does not make this my fault, or me a liar. I do regret that we didn't hear that front noise louder initially, so that we may have pressed the issue harder. But we didn't lie. BTW, we too gave you a lower cost (and lower quality) option...but we choose quality first! And lastly the parking brake. You said "the pedal is way easier to push" after our repair. I came out to your truck and showed you that your parking brake was working perfectly. You agreed! So please elaborate on what you mean by "acting up". And bring them back if you think there is an issue and we will take care of it ASAP.

Same problem as before
I believe these guys are honest, but after spending $747.00 today, I have the exact problem I had when I drove my truck in to their shop. They suggested other options to try to determine the cause of my oil pressure problem, but just couldn’t see throwing more money into something that could have cost hundreds more.
Pat D. from Rusty's Garage responded on 01/31/2018

Larry
I am sorry that your truck needs more work than you were willing to do, but to be fair, you DON'T have the same problem you came in with. Your vehicle (with more than 200,000 miles on it) had several issues and multiple engine trouble codes when it came in. As well as an extremely dirty intake and a fouled throttle body, due to lack of maintenance. So the $700 you spent included those issues mentioned above along with diagnosis and us addressing the oil pressure problem. We discussed this with you and you approved all of these things. We would have loved to have resolved the oil  issue as well, fortunately that issue needs further work.

Nice local garage.
I have taken a few vehicles to this garage for a year or so now. The last visit with my Chrysler 200 did not take long. It was for an oil change and tire rotation. What really frustrates me is when you take your vehicle in for a rotation and the air pressure isn't even looked at. All my tires were low and needed air so I assumed that would be taken care of. Also there was a check engine light on the car when I left. I cleared that myself and also handled the air pressure myself after my visit. I like the guys that work here but I expect more service than what was received. I'm considering going to the dealership and just paying a little extra to ensure my vehicle is taken care of.
Pat D. from Rusty's Garage responded on 12/27/2017

I'm so sorry about you bad experience at our shop yesterday. I will make no excuses, and only add my frustration to yours. I do not want this to ever happen again. I thought we had procedures in place to make sure we don't allow issues like yous slip through the cracks. Obviously we still have work to do in that area. I will make the necessary corrections here and while we may have lost you as a customer, at least we will not drop the ball again like we did with you. As you know from your previous visits and from other reviews this is not our SOP. Again, I'm sorry.

Car battery
Had battery problem and dropped off Rav to check. Received call from garage telling me that the battery was the problem and everything else checked out okay. Was told it was $200 for new battery. When I picked up cat the bill was over $300. What they failed to mention was the additional charge for labor. I bell eve the garage should give a full estimate of what it costs when comparing options.
Pat D. from Rusty's Garage responded on 07/12/2017

Sorry for the bad communication Randy! I am happy to refund the money if you found a deal on a battery you would have taken elseware. I thought we were only talking the $30 diagnostic fee when you picked up the car. Our battery has a nation wide 42 month free replacement. I believe that's the best in the industry and is a little higher on the front end but cheaper in the long run. Again I apologize, no excuse for bad communication. Let me know what you'd like me to do and I will.

Oil change
I've been getting my oil changed here for awhile however I won't be back. This last oil change took over an hour and I had an appointment . I find an hour for on oil change to be ridiculous . I'll be going somewhere else from now on

Rusty's works with you on the price of repairs.
Free estimates. I would prefer dealing with the owner (Rusty) when we check out. Sometimes the folks at the desk are not always congenial.

When I checked on line the price of the part replaced, it was $114.20 and I was charged $268.07 for the part at Rusty's Garage. What a markup.
Everything was good except the mark up on the part replaced was considerable. The markup was over 100% compared to same part on Amazon.
Pat D. from Rusty's Garage responded on 07/25/2016

Hey Phillip, you never mentioned you wanted a cheaper fix when you approved our quote. The price we quoted was for a factory part purchased from a Ford distributor. We don't shop Amazon for cheap parts that take a long time to get that we can't warranty. So with our higher priced part you're guaranteed 3 things. 1st the right part (if we wait on the Amazon part for 2 days and it's wrong...then what?) and 2nd, quicker repair (you said you needed the car by 1:00) then 3rd, a two year warranty  that we can't do with Amazon. However we are perfectly willing to do cheaper, riskier, no warranty work...but that's not what we recommend.

Hmmmmm
Well, had to bring my truck back because the work was not done right the first time. Very fair, only paid for an additional part and not the labor. This was to repair a manual transmission. It seems that the work was done right, but I'm reserving judgement, that's why only 3 stars. I do like the people there and they communicated well. So right now I don't know if I recommend them at this time. Debating whether or not this is the mulligan I give them because I've been pleased in the past, but din not require major work.
Pat D. from Rusty's Garage responded on 10/23/2015

Aivars
I'm sorry we made a mistake while repairing your transmission. There was no indication after repair that anything was wrong, it drove great. We didn't try to duck or dodge responsibility, we owned up and certainly tried our best to correct our error when the truck came back. We will stand behind our repairs and never leave you "hanging out to dry". My hope is to  regain your trust somehow, until then, please accept our apologies.

Air Condditioner Freon Re-Charge
I come to you guys because I know the work will be done right...and if there should be a problem afterwards you' will correct it....To be honest, the price of $158 was a little more than I expected since Pat had said on the phone previously that it would be about $100....but I really have no idea what the price would have been elsewhere.
Pat D. from Rusty's Garage responded on 07/01/2017

Jack, I'm sorry we told you $100 and didn't remember. I'll happily refund the $58. $158 is the normal price for Evac & Recharge, we do run specials for $100 from time to time. If you would have reminded me of that while you were here I would have done it for $100. So come get your $58 and please accept my apology.

Good Service
I was given a comprehensive diagnostic before work was done. I was told an accurate price that didnt vary at the time of pick up. I gave 4 stars because I was told I would have a loaner, but never recieved one. However, they did pay for an Uber to get me where I needed to go. Overall, good quality service.

A timely update would be appreciated (even if you haven't had a chance to look at the car yet); at least you could let the customer know that you haven't gotten to it yet. A call to let the customer know their vehicle is ready to pick up. Thx for always being friendly.

Car repair
We had gone to a Toyota dealer for a recall and they recommended some service work for our Rav4. We felt that the prices they quoted were way out of line. On a previous visit I had an oil change there and they wanted $70! I was surprised and after questioning them the bill was lowered to $56 (which I still believe is too high). We spoke to some friends who bring their cars to Rusty's Garage so we thought we would give them a try to see if there prices were more in line. After Pat took a look at our car he said that it did not require any service work and the service the dealer requested was not necessary until our car reached 100K miles. We will definitely use Rusty's Garage for our future auto needs and appreciate the good honest people who work there!
