A true drivers SUV that will make you smile every time you drive it

After trading in my 2011 X5 diesel with dynamic handling package for a 2015 with the same, I found myself extremely disappointed with the handling of the new. It was so poor that after multiple attempts for have it improved with different tires, BMW service, etc. I decided to get rid of it. On a whim I drove a low mileage 2013 X5M and man did my happy senses light up. Sure this one only gets 15 miles to the gallon instead of 25, but other than that, this thing is awesome. It is hard to imagine how BMW managed to make a 2 ton suv handle like a sports car and in addition without ever feel harsh. The feedback and feel for this SUV is amazing and the more aggressive it driven, the more it comes into it's own. Good handling with excellent feedback is everything to me and the beast of an engine is just gravy. Sure the 2015 felt like it had a tighter interior and was a little more sophisticated inside, but once you hit the M button and go for a drive on this last generation X5 without the numb electric steering, you will be all smiles. I also find the older exterior much more appealing than the new ones, which look like somebody different worked the back while somebody else created the front. I have had the chance to also test the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, but I hugely prefer the X5M the way it manages to feel light and almost small the way it handles. If you have the chance to own or drive one of these, run for it!

A driving enthusiasts dream with versatility

Bought this suv used with 24k miles and I’m at 91k now. I traded my 2015 x5 for this 2013 x5m because I couldn’t stand the handling and electric steering in the new one and never looked back. No gimmicks and the handling with the hydraulic steering is phenomenal in feedback and feel. Combined with the powerful engine and lightning fast shifting automatic is all I could ever ask for. Amazing how a 5000 lbs vehicle can handle like a gokart. Puts a smile on my face every time I drive and at over 90k miles it still doesn’t use a drop of oil between services. Yes, parts and service is expensive at BMW, but thankfully I have a local shop who can do almost everything and I’ve had very few issues over the years outside of normal wear and tear. It will be a sad day when I have to let this suv go. I’ve driven Porsche and Mercedes Sports SUVs and I would take this one over them any day. Just plain awesome for those who value pure driving joy over gimmicks. Just ditch the run flat tires.

I love my X5M

This vehicle is not for everyone, but for those that it works for, it is a blast to drive. The draw for me was super-car performance potential, in a comfortable, stylish, and practical application. I can use it as a work truck when I need to, and take it to the track the next day. The X5M has a comfortable ride, that is equally capable in high-speed cornering with its all-wheel drive and torque vectoring capabilities. Stock power is ample, but in modified and tuned form, this vehicle is a beast. As with most high-end automobiles, this one is fairly expensive to maintain. Some of the bespoke parts alone are very expensive, especially when added to labor costs for repairs. It is helpful if one is mechanically-inclined and enjoys wrenching on cars. Performing one's own maintenance and repairs can add up to tremendous savings. Lastly, gas mileage is not very good. But, in my view is a trade-off, and expense, for the high-performance aspects at a reasonable price on the used vehicle market.

The last of the real drivers SUV's?

While one can argue the styling or creature comforts of this SUV, there is no denying the performance of it. Yes, there are faster ones out there now, if all you care about is 0-60 or a few tenth on the stopwatch. People care about different things, so everyone has to make their own judgement. To me, I care about handling, feedback, fun and how the car feels and it's here where this one scores a hundred on my personal scale. Prodigious power and torque, rear wheel biased, hydraulic steering with feedback like a go-kart. Stab the throttle in the middle of a tight turn and it steps out, but is very easily controlled and you always know exactly what's going on. Sooooo much fun! I can travel 700 miles in a day at a good clip without being sore when you get out, check! Loads of storage and towing capacity, check. I have driven the newer ones and I can't stand where the car industry has gone. Distracting, huge screens making everything more complicated, numb steering and brakes, gadgets I don't need and black shiny surfaces everywhere that will show every fingerprint and blind you when the sun hit's it at the right angle. My only problem with this SUV? I have no idea what I will get to replace it when the time comes. At 107k miles, it doesn't use any oil yet, so I hope this will last me a few more years. If I find a low mileage one somewhere, I will snatch it up. That's about the highest compliment I can give. Bought it at 24k, never left me stranded.
