Don’t Buy One - Engine Issues

This is my 4th Hyundai, and 2nd Elantra, and I can tell you that I’ll never be buying one again. At only 2.5 years old and less than 82,000 miles, the spark plugs, valve cover gasket, fuel pump, entire engine, and engine air intake had to be replaced in that order to fix a sever misfiring issue that my car experienced due to low compression in one of the cylinders that caused the entire car to shudder violently at all times while driving. One would have thought that a full engine replacement would have solved the issue, but the 2nd engine began misfiring in less than 24 hours from replacement. Even though my car is running ok-ish now, I still don’t trust it, and don’t feel I ever will after the 2+ months it took to solve the issue. I don’t know that I’ll ever be buying another Elantra, or even another Hyundai for that matter after my experience of having to deal with this issue.

Disappointed

This is the second Elantra that we purchased. The car does not drive as good as the previous one, we already had to buy five new tires in less than two years; also it doesn’t drive as well as the previous Elantra . We will not get a new Elantra at the end of our lease

Nice Package Until Engine Grenaded (Elantra Sport)

For the money, this was a clear beat value choice compared with other new and used car options in the under $20K range. Excellent packaging, sporty performance and great features. Multiple engine issues, including a required replacement, kept the car in the shop 30 days so far. One dealer made several botched repairs that we had to go to another dealer to address. Now there is an excessive valve ticking noise. We will not keep this car a minute beyond its warranty expiration, and will not buy another Hyundai.

Feelings about my car

It's inferior, poorly made. I have 17,000 miles. Two months ago had to be towed, it was running rough, found out defective could had them all changed. Battery died, replaced with new on no warranty defective tail light put a new bulb in same thing happened, now they say a pully or something like that needed to be replaced. I'm afraid to drive far this car is defective and a lemon if they put in a new battery why wouldn't they warrenty

Below Average

The Elantra is noisy (back lid covering trunk and spare tire) and the general "drive" of the car is not as fluid or smooth as our 2000 Mitsubishi Galant. The Elantra does poorly in the snow and ice - much worse than our Galant. The Elantra gets excellent gas mileage and the sound system and blue tooth are more than adequate.

Front demister cannot work on high speed with air con

My front window air con only works on number 1,on 2,3&4 the air to demist the window is not air con.I took the car to the service centre 5 times & was told it's the normal workings & nothing is wrong. When I need to demist the front window I cannot choose the air con speed, which is ridiculous.I was told heat automatically comes out from speed 2.RUBBISH.I was told it might be set to another country.RUBBISH.I was told ALL hyundai work this way.RUBBISH.I complained to the customer care via email, only to be told I have had it checked & it is working as it should.

Not happy about being extorted by Hyundai

My wife wanted a vehicle with extra comfort & convenience features such as heated seats, remote start, power this and that. Having owned 4 Toyota products, that was the 1st place we looked. Being near retirement, and wanting to conserve cash, the Toyota was well over budget. Looking at other makes, the Elantra was fitted with the features she wanted, and was affordable. The car is driven only in the winter months, as she drives her Mustang in the summer (if its not raining). First it was the thermostat. It was replaced twice, and it still takes 4-5 miles of driving until heater/defroster blows hot. Keep in mind, the car stays in a heated (to 50 degrees) garage. Then the battery in the keyless entry had to be replaced within 18 months. The car was parked at an airport parking lot for a week, only to be greeted upon return by a dead battery. The battery was found to have a dead cell, and replaced under warranty. I bring these issues up because the 12 year old Corolla I drive daily has had the original key fob battery replaced twice, and the 12v OEM battery replaced once over the 12 years I've had it. The "extortion" issue comes from being forced purchase unnecessary "Blue Link" features to keep the remote start function. This is a $200 yearly expense. This is probably what turns me off the most about this vehicle. Finally, as mentioned, my 12 year old Corolla which is driven every day has stood the test of time with money only spent for routine maintenance. It's hard for me to envision the Elantra providing this kind of service. I gave the car a 3 rating on reliability score as this has yet to be determined.

Vehicle is solid, support lacking.

Vehicle is good for the price. Support after the sake SUCKS! Door locks malfunction and battery issues within the first 32 months. Service has left me feeling non-valued even with Management knowledge of the situation.

Performance ok, esthetics poor quality

2017 Elantra's paint is peeling for a 3rd time. Tan interior picks up any little piece of dirt and is hard to remove from fabric. Driver's side control panel is peeling/chipping. White body, tan interior is a dud.

Fraudulent practices

My 2017 Elantra Limited software system is a complete failure! No proper indicators to inform me of problems! No low oil warnings, no check engine warnings! My car system just started shutting down completely while I was driving. Replaced engine at just over one hundred k miles!! Also proprietorship on 95% of parts means all dealer parts which are expensive!! Will never own another Hyundai!!!

Suboptimal Reliability

I purchased a "Factory Certified Used Vehicle" 2017 Hyundai Elantra in January 2020. Within three months, the battery died and required replacement. The dealership considered the item as "maintenance" and would not cover the cost of replacement. Within that same period, the radio temporarily stopped working for a week. Further, recurring rough idling, power loss, vehicle shuddering and near stalling prompted four service calls between February and September. Apparently, the roadside assistance line was down during part of August so I had to hire a towing company to transport the vehicle to the dealership. It took quite awhile and a letter campaign before Hyundai reimbursed the towing cost some weeks later. During the 2nd warranty work for the above engine problem, two (of four) faulty coils were discovered and required replacement. Less than two weeks after that, the problem recurred, the service engine icon illuminated and another service call was made. The dealership kept the vehicle for a week at the time but could not diagnose the problem, despite my description of the identical malfunction as with the prior event. The vehicle was returned unrepaired, and soon the problem arose a fourth time (September), when yet another coil was determined to be the problem. Luckily, there are many other makes and models of vehicles available, and based upon my individual experience, I will not purchase another Hyundai, regardless of its impressive warranty. It certainly needs a ten-year warranty. It has been an inconvenience to date, requiring me to seek alternative transportation each time the vehicle sits in the dealership service department.

New engine in 4 years, I’m the only owner and a lot of accessories don’t last such as door handles including the button on the door handle. Sub woofers were replaced twice and my volume never goes even near capacity.

Loved the car until 2 months ago

I loved my Elantra until the paint started peeling off . Large pieces just started peeling off. Now I have a 2017 can that now has no value and no one at the dealer ship is helping me They said I have too many miles on it. I have 46,000 miles . So I guess Hyundai will only take care of problems if you don’t drive your car

Eh!

I bought my 2017 Elantra, by 35k miles the transmission needed to be replaced due to the original being faulty, spent over a month at the dealer waiting for a transmission to arrive (?!). 5k miles after that all 4 ejectors gave out, that was also replaced. This shouldn’t happen to that was less than 4 years old. The paint is very cheap quality, faded and chipped less than a year in. I no longer trust this car or Hyundai products.

2017 Elantra

I have to say I am not happy with my Elantra. They r road noisey, not comfortable, radio sux, and it boggs & feels like its gonna die at idol and st lights. Ppl i have talked to says theirs does it too. Must b a Elantra thing. Jacked up my credit after i bought this car so dont have a means of trading or repurchase, so we have what we have and we will prolly have it til it falls apart.. But i would not purchase another Elantra.. I definately reccomend test driving it befor u buy, cuz all of the above is immediately noticeable !

Basic model

I went for cheap model and kind of regret it, picked the manual transmission version, Stick is a fun drive but gets old after a time, No cruise control made long distance trips a nightmare, and I bought the car up north, so tinted windows wasn't even a considerastion for me at the time. I regret this purchase for those reason all these years later. As for some minor quality issues, I have bubbles in the LCD display of the radio unit, and the hood paint is already peeling.

the engine has a tapping sound it,it sounds like gonna blow when you accelerate, has been in dealership several times for problem ,they keep replacing things but problem not fixed still taps AND the car only has 36000 MILES ON IT and they say it falls with in specs???? i had another elantra same year same engine ,,,,you couldnt tell it was running it was so quite,i even let the manager listen to how quite it was ,and then went over to the other one and it sounded like a bucket of screws inside the engine when you give it a little gas..and they have the nerve to say it falls with in Hyandai specs,REALLY
