Hyundai Ioniq PLUG-IN Hybrid Review

Yet again there is no distinction made here between the hybrid version of the vehicle and the plug-in hybrid version of the vehicle (or the same mistake which is often made between the pure electric version and the plug-in hybrid version). The plug-in hybrid option is what I bought and there is a distinct reason why I bought it. I am a huge fan so far of my car. I am on pace to get about 4,000 miles on my first tank of gas. My electric bill was actually less this year than it was last year (granted, we ran a space heater much of last year's March). That being said, this problem of making a distinction between the vehicles is something that Hyundai seems to not really care that much about. My owner's manual is often times unclear about which version I own. There were several questions that we had about the difference between a regular combustion-only engine car and this vehicle that were never answered between the owner's manual, the dealership, and the quick version of the manual.

THE FUEL ECONOMY IS GREAT!

THE FUEL ECONOMY IS GREAT! I TREAT IT LIKE A GAME TO GET THE MOST OUT OF IT. IT IS VERY COMFORTABLE TO DRIVE LONG DISTANCES. THE AMOUNT OF CARGO SPACE IS UNEXPECTEDLY LARGE. THERE IS A LOT OF ROOM FOR SUCH A SMALL CAR

Perfect Car!

I love this Car! It's fun to drive, easy to get used to and gets better fuel economy than they report. I averaged 60-63mpg with a max of 66.8mpg. There was a repair made and now I don't get that kind of mileage, but Hyundai is helping get it fixed. I drive Uber with it and it works great!

2018 Ioniq

This is a really nice car, drives very well, gets great gas mileage, comfortable, looks great and drives great. I think that it is a much superior car compared to the Prius. I'm surprised that Hyundai doesn't advertise this car more than it does.

Good Value for Money

Have been a proud owner for a month and am mostly happy with the decision. Like the space and easily the best choice for me to carpool with 3 other buddies. Trunk space is great and so far have had great help with lane assistance and adaptive cruise. Am not happy with the dirt accumulation between doors/trunk because of inclement weather and also find climate controls confusing.

Love my car

I looked at about a dozen different cars over 15 month span. I test drove this vehicle twice, two different dealers, and very different weather conditions. It’s everything I was looking for. It has all the features I wanted, they’re easy to use, the navigation screen controls are well located easy to read, I love the fact that it’s a hybred and the potential mileage I can get. Beats the Toyota Prius hands-down and features, comfort, cost, overall value

Comfortable, handles well, good looking, great MPG (Blue trim line)

I have owned/driven my Ioniq for 1 month, mostly city and highway, a few country roads too. I commute about 100 miles round trip several times a week. I was concerned about reviews that said the seats are not comfortable and the brakes are clunky, but I have experienced neither of these issues. The seat comfort and braking are both very good. I am 6' tall and find the front seat leg room and head room excellent. The view out the rear window through the rear-view mirror is somewhat limited height-wise, but it helps to set the driver's seat lower to improve vertical rear visibility. Front and side visibility is good. I like the push-button start and the push-button lock/unlock on the front doors. I can unlock, drive and lock my car without ever touching the key fob in my pocket. But the key fob can be used to lock/unlock the car remotely. To start the car you have to depress the brake pedal while you press the On/Off button. The key fob can unlock the hatchback but it does not release the latch or open the hatchback. You have to push the button on the handle to pop the latch and then manually lift the hatchback. I drive mostly in Eco mode for best fuel efficiency and acceleration is somewhat sluggish but tolerable. In Sport mode this car accelerates like a sports car. Switching between Eco and Sport modes is as simple as a left-or-right flick of the shifter. With the 6-speed transmission I notice the engine sometimes will race briefly when I first turn on the car, or when it shifts from 1st to 2nd gear. It has the option of manual shifting but I haven't found this necessary or useful out here on the Great Plains. If I was shifting manually I would probably shift into 2nd earlier than the automatic transmission does. The dashboard displays help me monitor my fuel efficiency in real time. I have been able to drive in electric-vehicle mode on the freeway at 70 mph on a slight downhill slope for over a mile before the gasoline engine kicks on. My true fuel efficiency on my first few tanks of gas is about 47 mpg in March when high temps are in the 30s-50s and lows in the 20s-30s. I expect better gas mileage in the summer. I bought the Blue trim line for maximum fuel efficiency but I have to admit I was not comfortable with the tire mobility kit. The instructions were difficult to understand and I was worried about getting stranded, so I bought a spare tire kit and had it installed by a local dealer. The steering wheel controls are well placed and intuitive to control the entertainment system, voice commands, display screens and cruise control. The headlight controls are on the left side of the steering wheel and the windshield wiper controls are on the right side, both easy to use and understand. The entertainment system is good. I can play music from my Android phone on Bluetooth or from a USB flash drive. I have had good luck using Android Auto with voice commands for navigation, but Android Auto only works when my phone is plugged into the USB plug on the car; it doesn't work by Bluetooth alone. That means I can't play music from my USB flash drive when I'm using Android Auto because there is only one USB jack in the car. There is also internal memory in the car where music files can be saved (My Music) but I don't know how much memory is available; the owner's manual does not say. I have had issues with Android Auto disconnecting at random for unknown reasons; I'm not sure if the problem is with my phone or the Ioniq. The climate control works well and the controls are simple and intuitive. I have used heat, A/C and defrost and all work well, although I have not yet had a chance to use A/C in the heat of the summer. I like that the entertainment system controls are all situated around the touchscreen, separate from the climate controls which are situated below the entertainment system controls. I also like that there is a "Driver only" button to shut off the passenger climate control, which saves energy when I am traveling alone. I don't haul a lot of stuff but the hatchback and fold-down rear seats seem to provide plenty of cargo space. Overall I have found my new Ioniq to be a very nice car, fun to drive, reliable, comfortable, and fuel efficient. The price is reasonable and the warranty very good. I recommend this car!

Hyundai ionic hybrid plugin

It's an amazing vehicle that I'm extremely happy with my purchase. It's very quiet and when I'm driving i feel like im in a luxury car. The car over all is a win-win. I don't spend too much time at the pump and I spend more time getting where I need to go. All in all this car is fantastic!

Fabulous Hybrid Car

This is a really super car. We wanted an extremely fuel efficient and very reliable car that was also down-to-earth user friendly and not over-filled with confusing gadgetry. Our research started at fueleconomy.gov, which gave the Hyundai Ioniq models consistently top-of-the-line rankings. And then we started to read all sorts of reviews from various sources about the Ioniq, the Prius, the Insight, etc. Along with characteristics described above, I have an innate dislike of CVVT transmission systems -- and Ioniq's use of a double-clutch hybrid transmission really sounded brilliant and was reviewed as such. The car is everything we wanted; and even in the mountains of North Carolina we consistently average 58 - 63 mpg.

Refined, efficient comfort

The car is peppy when you need it to be, and very fuel efficient otherwise. Its interior is very comfortable and refined, with a surprising number of options for the price. Its build quality appears very high. It is generally quiet--you can hardly hear when the engine starts while you're driving--but does suffer somewhat from road noise on rough pavement. The dual-clutch transmission shifts smoothly. Steering and braking are very responsive. The ride is somewhat active, but not uncomfortably so. Its smart appearance and perfect paint job elicit comments. It easily gets over 500 miles on a tank of gas.

Better than expected

The fuel economy is as advertised, and fantastic. I purchased the Blue model or the base model, and it has plenty of great options. The best surprise is how comfortable the Ioniq is. Overal I'm very happy.

2018 Hyundai IONIQ HYBRID

My review it based on the two previous cars that I owned which were Hyundai cars. One car was a 4 door Hatchback and the other was a 4 door accent. Both were basic models with air conditioning and Manual Transmission. The IONIQ will be my first Automatic Transmission car with almost all electric everything. When driving this car I feel like I am driving a Luxury car.

Great Hybrid!

The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is well equipped, has great gas mileage, is fun to drive with plenty of front leg room. I think you will find that it is more economical than other similar vehicles at a cost point that is nearly $1,000 less than other hybrids.

Very Enjoyable Ride

We wanted a hybrid and found a perfect one at the Hyundai dealership in Muskogee Oklahoma. We live in Enid, OK but drive to Muskogee to visit. After we saw the Ionic and experienced the dealership in Muskogee, we decided to make the purchase and have it serviced as a part of our regular visits there. Besides being very stylish, the combination gas/electric power provides a very smooth and rewarding drive. It is not a muscle car, so don't expect a lot of horsepower and fast 0-60mph times. If neither of those are more important than high gas mileage, then you will love driving this car. We can set the cruise at any speed and it performs very well. I'm sure after the engine has been broken in properly you could experiment with mashing the pedal down and seeing what the ultimate response would be for getting off the line at a stop light or for aggressively passing someone on the highway. Again, we weren't looking for that type of car so we are very ,very satisfied with the smooth and quiet ride we get from our Ionic Limited. The interior is another huge plus - heated leather seats, moon roof, compass, outside temperature reading, entertainment center with backup camera, and some of the most informative graphics on the dash that you can scroll through to see how the car is performing - and the price to get all these features is extremely reasonable. We paid less than $29K for ours. We wanted a key-fob car with the push button start and that's how this car comes standard. When you push the button and the car turns on in electric mode without a sound - it is a great feeling that can't be described accurately. If you get one, I believe you will be as thrilled as we are.

Early Plug-in Ioniq adopter

Excellent option for anyone looking for an electric commuter while maintaining the ability to extend the range with the gas engine. The publicized 29 electric miles is in idealized conditions (i.e. not using heating/ac), but if your daily commute is under 25 miles total as mine is, you'll essentially never burn gas. "Essentially" because, it's important to note, the Ioniq PHEV has no "electric-only" mode. If you have to accelerate quickly on an uphill, it will kick on the gas engine; and if you need the heat, it will burn gas for a while simply to generate heat. This was disappointing to me at first, but I've quickly gotten used to the idea. It doesn't burn much gas at all to get the heat going, and in the case of acceleration, it promptly turns off the gas engine once you're moving (or accelerating more gradually). I plug in overnight using the wall socket in my garage, and I only fill the gas tank for long drives. In some sense, a PHEV is a half-measure, and it is a bit of a shame to lug around an internal combustion engine that I am constantly attempting not to use. On the other hand, I sure have needed the ICE on long drives -- I occasionally make trips to another city 175 miles away -- and right now the only fully-electric options that could get me there start at $10K more than the Ioniq and would necessitate installing a level-2 charger in the home for another grand. All in all, right now the Ioniq PHEV is the most affordable electric commuter around, and it's a robust option. Trunk space rivals the Kia Niro plug-in and Prius Prime, and it undersells those on price while delivering an attractively "normal-looking" sedan style interior. A note on charging: the manual lists the "ICCB (In-cable control box)," meaning the regular wall-plug that the car is sold with, as "for emergencies only." This appears to be legalese, for liability issues. Given that there's a gas engine, there aren't really "emergency" situations that you absolutely need electrical power. And there doesn't seem to be any problem with plugging in overnight every night to a wall socket. Sure, it should be have a ground-fault circuit interrupter (which they all do if they're in your garage and they're to code) and be able to take a sustained load. The ICCB has three settings, drawing 8, 9, and 12 amps, so if you're worried about it, you can start low. The car still reaches a full charge overnight on the lowest 8 amp setting. (For comparison, big AC unit draws 12 amps from what I've read.) In sum: I'm charging with the wall outlet full-time, and I'm not the only one, and it's all good so far.

Amazing car!

Love pretty much every feature of this car. The gas mileage and safety features were the biggest draws for me. The only thing I would change is the positioning of the pedals on the steering wheel. I accidentally touched them a couple times already!
