Should Have Kept My Toyota

Major repairs after 5 years and now more that the care is worth Paint began to peel off of door handles and hood after 6 years. Radio has never worked properly. Replacement parts are extremely expensive and the closest dealership is not up to professional standards. I always felt they were trying to get more money out of me. I found the interior design to be awkward as you had to look away from the road to adjust even the radio volume. I did like the outward design as the windows were wide and I had great sight to outside from all angles inside. No obstructive views.

Excellent for miles

My Hyundai was bought used. It’s already had it’s fair share of issues but, that comes with owning any vehicle, they age. The Sonata is great for long miles if taken care of, also with any vehicle really. It’s comfortable seating, semi luxurious ( if taken care of and not abused) for those of lower to middle class like myself. It’s a car. It gets me from point a to point B. Plain and simple.

Not bad

My 2005 Hyundai Sonata seems to have the usual wear and tear of a hyundai. Its roomy and comfortable enough. My only real complaint is the vibration at lights and a little when at idle. I read this is a 05 Sonata thing but not sure. I have owned mine for almost 2 years now. I would buy another one no doubt but maybe not an 05 because of the vibration issue?

A- buy

Tight budget and this was the best bang for the buck. Lots of features for lower price compare to competitors.

100% improvements from 1987 build.

Surprise Hyundai did not have courteous fix on these Repeat problems with door handle peeling paint. Power antenna fails. Rotor wraps. Gas filler does not seal.

2005 Sonata

I have put nearly 172,000 miles on the car. There have been no major problems. Hyundai could have done, and might be doing recently, better at some of the electrical components of the car. Wiring weakness resulted in false readings that the driver-side airbag was failing. This cost me a replacement that I didn't need. An excellent employee at the dealership put in the work to trace the real problem after the third such reading and the simple problem was fixed. Headlight bulbs burn out frequently, and I've learned from Hyundai people that this has been a common problem in this model. Reliability and efficiency are better than expected. I get nearly 30 MPG on the highway, about 11% better than rated. This is after almost 12 years. No rot, rust, or decay after that time - brakes and the rest of the car hold up very well. Won't be letting go of this car for a long time.

Mechanically the car is great. Rock Solid. The interior was a little cheap with flaking. Radio works but screen is bad. Seems to be normal for that model.

I will consider a new vehicle when I retire in two years. Body style is greatly improved! I hope they don't use cheap interiors and they fix the problem with the headlight plastic that dims out after 5 years.

Concerned with the low oil at 500 miles

Well I didn't know when the oil was changed so I set a trip meter for a reminder well about 500 miles oil light came on and went right off not the oil change but the low oil indicator wife drives it mainly it was for her so I checked the oil and barley on the stick I know it was topped off cause I checked it before I bought it also they were aware it needed an alingment I took care of that problem being a tech but I asked them to see if it has any leaks they said it didn't so I'm going to keep an eye on it

Good considering it's old

It's now 2017, so the 2005 Sonata is 12 years old. It runs well, but at this point, we are bringing the car in to change out rusted parts every couple months. I got the car used in 2013 so I'm not sure how it ran brand new. When I got it, the CD player didn't work and the latch that opens the gas cap didn't work (we have to access it through the trunk). These don't really affect our quality of driving experience... The only thing I don't like that I imagine has nothing to do with age is its acceleration/horsepower - sometimes I need to merge onto the highway quickly but it's kind of slow on the pick up and I feel like that is a safety issue. Other than that, everything else works well, including lights, blinkers, radio, AC, heat, pretty quiet engine, sunroof window... It looks nice, too.

Leap of faith purchase.

Had an Excel that say the least was not the best car made. So after review I made a leap of faith and bought my 2005 Sonata LX. Gave it 4 stars cause it did have some non major issues that Hyundai did not offer to fix that is on almost all Sonata's. Door handle bracket paint coming off, power antenna breaking all the time, headlamps blown less than a year....but bottom line I will still recommend Hyundai.

Reliable

Have owned this car since March 2005. Been reliable with general expenses but not to costly. Nice to not have a car payment. Have had to use my own car mechanic for parts and service which has been fine, because dealership parts and service to expensive. Looking at new Hundai Kia and Honda in the future.

2005 Hyundai Sonata

Good vehicle. Great value. Not at all controls are convenient, cruise control is one. But they didn't have all the goodies back then. A little loud on the highway. But reasonably comfortable for a small car. Should get better gas ⛽ mileage, but it runs well and hasn't had any issue

My mistake

I had recurring issues with the engine warning light when the car was brand new. It would come on again after a few attempts to fix the problem. After a few attempts I was told to ignore the light probably a bad sensor. 10 or so years late the car would stall at lights and run rough. At that time after getting engine cleaned for bad injectors and a healthy charge with no results, some components in the electronic fuel system were found to be out of spec, another $1000. I will never accept a new car with a spurious engine warning light!

Happy auto owner

Purchased used Sonata from dealer. This has been a very reliable vehicle. I still own this vehicle because of its reliability and performance. I do keep my family vehicles for longer period if they provide me all the positives that I require. Hyundai has provided me this, and last year my son punched his first new vehicle, a Hyundai Elantra.
