2017 Sonata, border line lemon

This is the worst preforming vehicle that I have ever owned. The transmission is a disaster, sluggish, poor acceleration. the smart dashboard is not user friendly. I wish that I still had my 1972 Chevy Vega, it was a way better car then this one. Even the Sonata that I traded in for this one was far better quality.

Recall on 2017. Very hard to get Hundai to correct the problem

The services not good for 2017. I previous owned a 2013 a very good vehicle - no problems. They have now completed the work on my car. I hope everything is fixed now. I so hope to get the 2021. My husband says no.

Not reliable

Hyundai has no customer service. Once you take it to an independent dealer for repair there's noone holding the dealer accountable for repairs. They still haven't fixed my car as it is worse now than when I took it in originally.

Paint chipping. You won’t even fix their problem. Don’t buy Hyundai. They suck. They were faithful Hyundai buyers. Sad when you have to pay for their mistakes and knew about the problems. Did not notify their customers.

Would not fix their problem. Paint was chipping. They fixed the problem themselves. Poor customer service. Daughter of Fred & Diane Ostrander. Don’t buy Hyundais Don’t take care of customers. Garvey sucks.

Non stop electrical/mechanical issues

I love this vehicle (color, options, comfort). However, the built quality (at least on mine) has been huge disappointment. Check BSD system error goes on, vehicle went into limp mode and engine/transmission/electrical failures, has been at the dealership multiple times and still not fixed. I also had a 2017 Sonata Hybrid and also gave me issues, traded it for the non-hybrid version thinking it was going to be better, I was not.

Gorgeous but has had issues.

The Hyundai Sonata 2017 is a gorgeous car with a nice size interior. The drive shaft column went out on me while driving at under (18,000 miles and less that a year old). It was very difficult to keep from wrecking with my young child in the back. It is still beautiful, they towed it, and the replaced the column, but definitely took away the feeling of safety. Now anything that goes wrong, immediately freaks me out. The also fixed the seatbelt, and air bag light, explained why it has a pull to the right, etc. Personally it pulling to the right scares me, but is a safety feature to keep you from going into the other lane if you fall asleep. I did not know this and thought my car was messed up. Also somehow it can be switched to Manual accidentally and you cannot move it to park until you or someone else get it out for you. I do not like that feature. I do like the was the car looks though.

Not a Hyuandai Guy - Probably Biased

Compared to my last 13 new BMWs, this does save on gas (8 MPG vs 38 MPG), but once you're used to driving a much superior, in every category, - crash protection (experienced 1st hand when another driver ran a red light, striking my door at 45-60 MPH and my front driver-side rim, severely damaging it causing the car to drive diagonally to the right, shortly after, the front driver airbags blew and the car came to a stop & I didn't know at the time, but I had taken out the side light pole and dragged it 30 ft before my car stopped itself - at which point BMW SOS Associates were talking to me through the cars stereo), stability, suspension, performance ( 625 BHW & 637 Torque), control-ability: Heads-Up Display (Current: MPH, RPM, Lane location, Local Posted Speed Limit - based on GPS, Upcoming Pedestrian/Animal in, or, on the side of, road notice - Forward and side IR systems), iDrive (One round knob controlling the following: Performance (HP, TQ, Auto Shift Firmness, Suspension Mode, Stability Control), Media (SIRIUS/HD/FM/AM Radio with RDS and traffic, DVD/CD Drive, Back Up Camera, Navigation, Bluetooth, 2 x USB & 3.5mm inputs), BMW Office (to read and/or create text files, voicemails or office files located on your smart device or a cloud location), BMW Maintenance (Displays the current: time/miles until next maintenance is needed, Fluid Levels, Tire Pressure, Temperatures, Air/Fuel Ratio, Pressure Levels & an option to click on "Schedule Maintenance Now"), BMW Apps (Pandora, Spotify, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Email & Web Browser) & BMW About (Current versions of: navigation maps; speed-based steering, vehicle, engine, transmission, differential, iDrive, HUD, fuel control, fuel management, ignition, drive-mode tuner, media, noise canceling, etc - ECUs & corresponding firmware versions -- as well as an option to choose "Check for and Update"). Between the HUD and iDrive systems you never have to look away from the road. Add to this the Speed-Based Steering system and you have a car you can jerk over to the next lane at 100 MPH, because the other driver didn't notice you were already in the lane he decided to get into, and although the fear of 'knowing' you're going to start spinning in circles and take out the whole freeway is blinding you, you arrive in the next lane as if it were a planned lane change. Compare this to looking down for current speed all the time as well as often having to delve several menus deep in the media center to find what you're looking for. I found it hard to drive (anything) for the first time since driving a manual in the late 80s.

Lemons

I went for a trade in on my 2015 Elantra and they forced me into a 2017 New Sonata that has issues in them I was not really pleased with the whole Deal.plus they told me I would only pay lower monthly payments but once I walked out I had a payment of way more of what’ was said.

'17 Sonata

I owned a 2009 Sonata limited and absolutely loved the car. With that being said I had hoped that the 2017 would be better. Boy was I wrong. When we got home with a brand new car it was making noise. Come to find out both of the rear wheel wells had come loose, they were not rubbing on the tires just sort of hanging there. The PLASTIC nuts had fallen off. Second, the trim piece on the passenger side rear door had also come loose and was just flapping in the breeze. The stereo is a downgrade from the 2009 model too. The worst, most annoying thing about this hunk of junk is the transmission, it has some serious lag and just plain rotten. As soon as I have some equity built up, I'll be unloading this piece of garbage. Hyundai you've disappointed me and lost a customer.

2017 sport sonata

I find it hard to hook up seat belt especially with a winter coat on. I also find it difficult look for side traffic the combination of mirror and post cut down on my view. The heater takes a long time to throw heat.

My 2017 Sonata should be recalled

The trunk latch failed after 13.5K miles, which makes it impossible to open the trunk. Dealer says this is a common defect & that there is no way to open trunk manually from the inside. When it fails again, my valuables will be trapped until it can be repaired. I contacted Hyundai & they basically told me to "live with it". Living with it means I can no longer use my trunk for luggage or groceries or computer equipment I need to make presentations for fear the latch will fail. If the part is expected to fail after 13K, then it should be built with a way to open the trunk from the inside. If not, then it should be recalled. Dr. Charles Rasmussen

Sonata Sport

Purchasing this auto was a big mistake after having the Sonata sedan. Altho this auto looks good, handles well, and has good gas mileage, buti for the money, it lacks some very basic features. Giving it three years.

Not the best

I won’t ever buy another Hyundai. At first it seemed great, debe great, acceleration was the best, now even after the spark plug repair it still lags in the acceleration process. Very poor repair. The repair mechanic did the least he needed to do. My report didn’t matter to him.

Was great, at first

Our car was great at first. We loved it! Now though, it's going downhill fast. Buttons are popping off, buttons are sticking and its beginning to ride rough after only a year. The Android Auto feature works sometimes but most of the time, it tells me, "I'm sorry, I dont yet know how to do that", "who's your mom", or just wont even attempt to send a text message. It only reads out about a quarter of the messages I am sent and Androud Auto was one of the reasons we chose this car! My drivers side window sometimes just falls, too. Not enough for us to get water in the car yet, but it's getting worse so it will be at that point soon. We spent way too much on this car to have this many problems with it so soon. This isnt a cheap car, it's supposed to be a luxury car, not an economy car. I could have spent this money on a better car and had less problems. No, I would not recommend this car to anyone.

Poor headlight performance.

Overall vehicle is above average. The headlights are very poor. Especially in rain or snow. Peripheral lighting : there is NONE. Interior quality could be improved. Seats are somewhat hard. Otherwise everything is laid out well but overall quality could be improved without alot of added costs.

Potential Reliability Problems

I loved this Sonata until Hyundai included it in the Campaign 953 Bearing Failure Warning Update. Now I have to worry about possible engine bearing failure. Why has Hyundai not fixed this problem yet??? It's been years with the same problems and I thought that by 2017 the bearing failure issue would be fixed. I now regret buying my Sonata.

The Sonata needs to have a V6 option again, and a total redesign of the interior and exterior. They also need to redo the sound system options for all levels of the sonata. Improve the ride quality as well as reducing the outside noise.
