My Experience with the 2025 Hyundai Tucson PHEV

I wanted to love this car. It’s a great concept on paper—efficient, tech-savvy, and stylish. But my experience has been filled with repeated issues and safety concerns that I can’t overlook. Ongoing Check Engine Light The Check Engine Light first appeared at just 430 miles. It came back at: 1,225 miles 1,506 miles 2,255 miles 2,657 miles 3,165 miles Each time I visited a dealership, the light was reset—but the underlying problem was never fixed. System Failures The side mirrors stopped responding to the reverse gear. The audio system stopped pairing with my phone. Both are frustrating in a vehicle marketed as high-tech and modern. Serious Safety Issue: Automatic Emergency Braking This is where things went from annoying to dangerous: Incident 1: While driving around 15 mph with ~20 feet to the car ahead, the vehicle braked hard for no reason. Incident 2: On the freeway at ~60 mph with plenty of space (~30–40 ft), the car suddenly braked. My passenger and I were thrown forward, and the car behind barely avoided a crash. Dealing with Dealerships This journey involved three dealerships: First dealership refused to service my car because I didn’t buy it there. Second dealership was excellent—professional, helpful, and provided two loaners (one for 30 days). The third dealership stepped up and towed my vehicle in and gave me another loaner. I'm now waiting for a real fix. Final Thoughts Hyundai, you have a great product idea, but the reliability and service consistency need serious work. I'm still hopeful this last dealership will resolve everything, but at this point, I have to say: actions speak louder than words. Would I recommend this car? Not yet. Maybe after Hyundai proves the issues have been resolved

Cannot remote start or stop charging

I loved my 2024 Tucson Hybrid plug in Limited so much I upgraded to to a 2025. Now this one will not allow start or stop charging through Bluelink. If I had known this I would have never spent the money to upgrade. Supposedly they are working on it but it’s been over 2 Months and I’ve heard nothing. Very disappointed!

We’ve had a series of bad experiences within a period of three weeks.

The car had to be serviced three times because the car would not start or an engine light went on - or both. It appears to be a defective 12 V battery which the dealer finally replaced after our third visit. This was unexpected and disappointing.

1st 90 days of ownership

Takes too long to charge. Hyundai should take note of Toyota for some fit and finish as Toyota is a step ahead in some engineering aspects

Meets my basic needs but too many quirks

I bought the Tucson PHEV because I wanted a plug-in hybrid SUV and it checked the boxes for price and size, and am very happy with the mileage it gets. On the other hand, it doesn’t drive any better than my previous 2018 Subaru Forster, nor is the interior significantly more comfortable. . The range of the vehicle in EV mode is less than advertise;, the ability to self-mange when it switches to/from hybrid to EV mode is limited, the back windshield wiper is an abysmal, ineffective design, and I’m having problems with the key fob that will require a trip to the dealer (which is almost an hour away). Not quite the upgrade I was hoping for compared to my previous car

Would have given a 5 but AC doesn't work consistently air not cold

Range is about 33 miles. Very nice ride, we love everything but the air conditioning, problem is not consistent and service saw the issue the first time but it was late in the day, so I had to come back early in the day and they couldn't get it to act up. It continues to work some days and some others not. Will take it back for service again.

Already been serviced twice

Overall the car is very nice and comfortable to drive. However, since purchasing it in July, it’s now been in to service twice. First with an intermittent air conditioning issue that was not resolved. When the AC eventually dies a few weeks later, the check engine light came on. We took it into Hyundai immediately. It was in the shop from last Thursday morning until I just picked it up today, Wednesday October 1st. During the time it was being worked on we received one update (when we called) that it needed a new compressor which supposedly arrived last Friday. Communication with the dealership was pretty lacking; however, I did call this afternoon and they informed me it was ready. When I picked up the car I was sent to a cashier who gave me some paperwork and my fob and said have a nice day. She was very pleasant but there was no one apparently available for any sort of explanation or description of what was wrong and what work was done. This is very different from the experience I’ve had with other cars we’ve owned. Anyway, the car ran fine on the way home but I’m now a bit nervous about what might go next. If so, not looking forward to going back to the dealership!

Great car, but need to fix the rug

Overall, we really like our 2025 Hyundai Tucson PHEV. But the rear floor mat is too big and doesn’t fit. We reported this problem before we purchased the car. We were told to take the car to service and they would resolve the problem. Service reported the problem to Hyundai, and Hyundai sent another rear format that is still too big/sloppy. Service says they’re still working on it, and I called Hyundai myself. But it’s been months with no resolution for a simple problem. Also, we love driving the car in electric mode, but it seems like if we turn on the heater or push the accelerator too hard, the car stays in hybrid mode and won’t go back to electric mode very easily.

I like the vehicle. Too much technology that you have to get used to.

Because there are a lot of buttons on the console, I am always accidentally putting the car in wheel lock when reaching for the controls on the dash. These buttons are too easily touched by accident

Great Car with Some Weaknesses in Tech

I absolutely love how it drives, super smooth and more like a small car than a suv. Its my first suv and a perfect intro one. I am finding the distance "assistance" and car take over does not work well and I turned it off because for me it created 2 hazardous situations.

Fuel efficient and generally well designed car

The PHEV Tuscon looks nice, is quite fuel efficient, and is generally well designed. That said, there are a number of design features that may not have been fully field tested or focus group. I appreciate the return of some physical buttons; I would love there to have been more. As a Boomer, I still use the radio regularly and it takes too many soft button taps to get where I want to be. I'm finding the lumbar support inadequate. There should be a light in the electric charging plug port so one can see to align the plug or plug cap. The app reports when windows are open after leaving the car but I've not found a way to close the windows from the app. The center face level air vents either blow in one's face or are closed.

Hyundai Tucson great car with high tech features

Became a fan of Hyundai after purchasing a Santa fr three years ago. I wanted a plug in hybrid SUV and decided to go with the Tucson. It was a great choice the two larger displays are great. Love how much tech is in the car. The wireless charging improved a lot from my 2022 Santa Fe.
