Great Cars Except The Marketing People Must Have Corrupted The Designers!

Subaru changes things for no apparent reason with each redesign. For example, on my 2008, one turns the wiper knob forward to increase the frequency of the intermittent wipers but on the 2012 is is just the opposite (took me two years to get used to it and now I dread what they are going to do to the new ones!). They now have that absurdly designed roof rack that does not give one ANY external hooks to tie down something that is too wide to get at the hooks inside the rack. Their promotions keep highlighting the outdoors value of the Outback but they continue to make the Outback less outdoor sports friendly by eliminating the solid frame hooks underneath each corner of the bumper that are safety-critical for the recommended "4-point" tie down of a kayak (i.e., two ropes around the belly of the boat then one bow and one stern to hooks below the bumper)! They put that useless manual shift option on an automatic transmission that when used on the steep hills crossing the mountains to Grand Teton Nat. Park, the car went into a wild shimmy as very slow speeds and the dealer says nothing is wrong with the car. Worst of all, they put cheap tires on the new models. The continental tires that came with my 2012 were so bad that my new Outback drove like a truck and the road noise of those tires outdid all of the quiet ride of the Outback. The tires and some persistent rattles in the tailgate and rear quarter-panel caused me to almost trade the care after just one year to cut my losses. Thanks to my wonderful salesman passing on a replacement tip, I was able to get Micheline "Defender" tires and then the car actually rode like a car instead of a truck and did so quietly! Why o why put a great big tachometer in the dash that is absolutely unnecessary for ANY competent driving either for fun or for serious?! The driver experience for most of us (who do not have the fantasy of being a NASCAR driver wannabe) would be much better served with a larger speedometer that is well lit under all driving conditions (my 2008 speedometer was unreadable on a sunny day!). Instead of something on the dash that is at least marginally useful like an AMP charging meter, they put a meter that says you are using gasoline when you depress the gas pedal and and not using gas when you do not do so and are going down a hill!!! Finally, they give us more headroom that is only useful for maybe folks who stand about 6 feet 5, making the car just tall enough to make it difficult to get kayaks on top of that useless roof rack!

The car with out soul or charactor

Very safe, Very capable and Very boring to drive. I do not love my Subaru. Maybe I should let my dog drive the car. Might add a-little joy to the experiance

11years and 92,000 miles

My wife and I had high hopes when we purchased our 2012 Subaru Outback Limited 3.6 R. One thing we did not consider was that there are no Subaru Dealerships in inland North San Diego County. Our choices are Carlsbad, Temecula, El Cajon, Kearny Mesa and National City. This unexpectedly added to our inconvenience when time for services. We were also quite shocked when we were told the cost for the major services. The car is not very DIY friendly. One only has to look online to see what it takes to change the headlight bulbs (which should always be done in pairs). Perhaps the designer should perform this work themselves before designing this system again. The interior is subpar for the cost of the car. It is rather on the “cheap” side. The seats are not very supportive but perhaps this is expected for this car type (although that was not the case with our 2000 Explorer). The car is great when the need for an off-road excursion is required. The AWD is outstanding as is the ground clearance. The paint quality is not uniform. Despite our car being garaged or covered with a cover when at work the paint on the rear hatch has gone bad, in particular on the top edge next to the rear window wiper. We do like the 3.6 R boxer motor which unfortunately is now discontinued. It is strong yet yields very good MPG on the highway commutes. The automatic transmission works very well and we really like the paddle shifters using those often to slow the car down before applying full braking pressure. Another apparent design flaw which surfaced two weeks into the car ownership was the design of the upper sheet metal of the front fender up near the windshield. Somehow, by accident or someone intentionally “showing off or just being a jerk” the sheet metal was bent up and out away from the hood/window. I could speculate that someone might have stooped a fall by grabbing hold of something and that would have been a convenient spot. But I speculate. To fix it of course requires removing the fender from the car. This area should not be that prone to such damage. Recently we were advised that the control module the motors fans had malfunctioned which was also affecting the AC. Thankfully the intermittent operation of the AC was the tip off of what could have become a catastrophic failure of the engine cooling system. I had taken car for a front brake job at a local independent shop who analyzed the problem. The part was apparently on national back order but I was able to purchase a new in the box OEM replacement module and because I have a pretty good tool set along with some creative imagination I was able to replace this myself. The Subaru Dealership that we purchased the car at and where 100% of the service has been performed at until this front brake job is less than stellar in our opinion. When scheduling service online the requested service apparently does not transfer through to the work order (this is a pretty substantial dealership). The wrong oil was put in despite my having labels placed right right next to the fill neck stating “full synthetic only”. I suspect the service techs are so overwhelmed with quotas that they could not even wait to confirm with the service advisor who was busy with a customer. No harm done but…. Then there was the time when the service advisor informed me that one the the wheel lugs was stripped and it would cost North of $400 to fix. I pointed out to him that only 2 firms performed work with the tires. Discount Tire for a new set of tires and the Dealership who did regular tire rotation. They fixed the lug on their dime. We have decided we will not be purchasing another Subaru despite their commercials claiming X percent still on the road today. We have not been pleased with the overall quality of the vehicle and the surprise service expenses we have experienced. The plastic trim that is prevalent on these models is prone to discoloration and requires continuous experimentation with products in an attempt to keep up its looks and durability. And of course we do not like the appearance of our vehicles degrading through no fault of our own.

Subaru

My Subaru has been a very dependable vehicle! My complaint‘s are that the mirrors are not quite sufficient in gaining a sense of a clear view behind myself when backing up or parking. Also the fabric used to upholster the seats is horrible! I would never ever recommend fabric that Subaru uses. Even a little spell of water is nearly impossible to remove the stain, it’s actually quite annoying and ridiculous. Be aware of the little auxiliary lights in the front. They are in sufficiently secured and often fall backwards and need to be secured which is a real pain. The seats are quite uncomfortable. But I got sheepskin seat covers from Costco and this made all the difference. Subaru needs to improve the whole seating situation especially the fabric choice

My 1993 was better

This car doesn't have near the traction of my 1993 Loyale. Climbing my hill in the winter, this Outback isn't much better than a standard front wheel drive car and you can't put chains on.

Bought it new in 2012

We’ve replaced 4 batteries- which is a documented issue. And just recently replaced the rear brakes. Other than that, the car has been perfectly reliable and no other issues

Design quality / performance

I put a lot of highway miles on my commuter vehicles. Driven at freeway speeds 90% of the time. Added traction is a plus compared to other vehicles I considered for this duty, but it is no Grand Cherokee on a snowy grade. This is a very well built, economical and reliable ride. Only 2 criticisms - 1. Hard to locate garage door buttons on the mirror especially in the dark. 2. Must actively saw the wheel on some road surfaces or in a cross wind , especially in the rain. Less noticeable with additional on-board weight. Otherwise, I got what I expected. Its not a Jeep, a sports car or an orphan with compromised design intent. It economical and a nice all weather solution with comfort for back seat passengers and room to bring gear on extended trips.

We love it!

We have always been Lincoln, Ford, Mercury people and I,myself, have always driven a van or a truck. I was not certain that I would like the Subaru, but you had a crackerjack sales rep., Frankie de la Has, that talked us into trying one and while it wasn't love at first site - it came that way a few weeks later! This will probably be our last car purchase and it has been one of the best!

well rounded

It does nearly everything very well. The 3.6 engine is very powerful and gets good mileage. Mountain passes, hills, and passing are so easy.

The go everywhere sewing machine

I have a 3.6R. Sewing machine sound but it reallyruns well, rides well, everything works, very quiet. Utility is high. Quality of build high. Sound system good. Seats great. Weakness, silly lack of all door opening option. Silly at this level, a Limited, no passenger 8 to 10 way seat adjustment. Head lamps difficult to change and frequently burn out in about 12-18 months.
