Cars are complicated machines, and it’s generally not easy to distill complicated issues down to one single thing that’s wrong, to blame. It’s frustrating when things don’t go right, but we are happy to work through issues, to get things right. It takes patience and intelligence, which we have learned over the years, are two very important ingredients for excellence in business success.
Ms. Sierra S. had minor work done on her vehicle at another repair shop. After the work was completed, an oil seal failed, resulting in engine damage. The other shop paid us ($3,500) to install a used engine. That used engine came with a six month parts & labor warranty.
Approximately three months later, that used engine, which we installed, suffered a bearing failure. We stand behind our work, and so we fully honored the warranty.
To provide the best possible service to Ms. Sierra S, our work included the following:
• We provided a complimentary loaner vehicle for her to use during the entire time that we worked on her vehicle – (that’s not included in the terms of the warranty, it’s just an added bit of kindness that we try hard to extend to customers with complex repairs to minimize their inconvenience of being without their car).
• We searched the entire country for the best possible replacement engine to install in her vehicle. We ended up shipping an engine in from Minnesota that had 80,000 fewer miles than her original replacement engine, which had 170,000 miles on it.
• We installed a new radiator (oil cooler), new oil cooler lines, new water pump and we transferred the new ignition parts that we had previously installed.
There is no way of knowing exactly why the bearing failed - there was no evidence of a lubrication system failure, or of a cooling system failure (the usual culprits).
The standard practice with an engine replacement would be to flush out the radiator (oil cooler) and oil cooler lines, but we made the decision to replace the radiator (oil cooler) and oil cooler lines, instead of relying on flushing them out.
We took the time to explain to Ms. Sierra S. that we were replacing (at our expense) vs. flushing, to try to further reduce the possibility of future problems. Unfortunately, Ms. Sierra S. chose to interpret that we were somehow covering for some mistake that we made with the original repair, which is not the case – we were just honestly and genuinely, going above and beyond for her, in order to do what we could to potentially avoid or reduce future problems.
The final clarification is on our warranty process. Our warranty process is no different than any other product warranty. If there is an issue and it is covered within the terms of the warranty, the product is repaired / replaced. Nothing about the repairs performed under warranty changes the original warranty period or terms. When a repair is done under warranty, the time frame of that warranty does not reset or re-start.
This is an industry that is somewhat plagued by the reputation of distrust. Within the Mears Community of Customers we have built a very loyal following by doing our very best to be honest and straightforward with people. We tell it like it is, and we honestly do our best to fix things right. When there are problems, we stand behind our work, and make good on making things right. With patience and intelligence, we did our best for Ms. Sierra S. because we value each and every customer relationship.
