Battery was overheating and spraying acid, had different opinions from different repair shops, including excess voltage relaying back to the battery. Battery was still reading fine with plenty of voltage & amps. I replaced alternator, which housed the voltage regulator, based on opinions I heard--did not solve the problem. I drove to Joel's Automotive, Joel and mechanic came back with diagnosis of bad battery with a short, turns out this was correct, problem solved. Fixed problem while I was waiting.
