Shady Business Practices
Fortunately I've been around the block a few times and recognize the signs of a shady auto business. First, they required up front money to do a diagnosis. I said that it was obvious - the alternator belt was broken, and I can't turn one of the engine accessory pulleys for that belt. If I had a flat tire would they charge to diagnose that? Snarkiness aside, I reluctantly approved the diagnosis, even though this is the first time I have ever been asked to pay for a car service in advance. Ok, so they get back to me later with the following major bits: the AC compressor and AC dryer are broken and need to be replaced. Cost: $1400. IN ADDITION, they said the brake pads were worn down to 4-5mm and should be replaced, and the rotors were rusted and needed to be replaced. Cost: over $700. Wow! I though that was odd because I replaced the brake pads recently and the braking surface of the rotors were not rusted or grooved! So I said no way pal , called AAA and had the car towed to Red's in Ocoee. The looked at the AC and said there was nothing wrong with it other than a very slow leak which they worked on to slow it some more. They replaced the broken belt and now the alternator and AC work just fine. The pulley that I couldn't turn was not frozen and had nothing to do with the belt breaking, which was most likely due to normal wear and tear. They looked at the brakes and said they were in fine shape with very little wear, as I expected. So, the bottom line is that the people at Swinson thought I would be an easy mark, perhaps because I'm a senior citizen. I asked for my diagnostic fee bto be refunded since the inspection was obviously bogus, but I don't have high hopes.
