$900 in fees, Security fee scam
WARNING: Do not buy from Zeigler Hyundai or any other Zeigler stores without reading. They have $900 in fees they will add to the vehicle and they have other shady practices.

Synopsis: They list cars as certified online but try to get out of it, they will add $499 security fee that you cannot get out of, and they attempted to change the trade-in offer after putting it in writing. They also have a $399 service fee that will be tacked on to your vehicle. Understand these things before stepping foot in their store.

On 3/19/24 my wife found the vehicle she wanted on the lot at Zeigler Hyundai. Color, Trim, years mileage, etc. This is a 3.5 hour drive from our home so she called to set up an appointment and confirmed that it was certified as clearly stated on the website.

After she arrived they attempted to claim that the vehicle was not certified and it was a mistake on the website. (they conveniently have language in the fine print on the website that it might not be accurate). Luckily she called ahead and knew who she spoke to and when. They actually went back and reviewed the recorded phone calls before they would believe her and honor their word. They said it had already been through inspection for certification but that they hadn’t actually certified it with Hyundai yet. They repeatedly talked about how they were “eating” around $2000 in cost, like they were doing her a favor. The fact that they already sunk this cost makes me believe that they fully intended to upsell the certification and that they likely do this often. Also they only provided 1 key, which means they missed/ignored one of the inspection points, so we had to call to get that fixed.

She really liked the vehicle and the salesman Myles. The vehicle was in good condition and the salesman was professional and knowledgeable so she proceeded to talk numbers and trade in.

They sent a link to the trade condition report showing an “instant offer of $8575” and hand wrote that number with the selling price to show the tax benefits of the trade. Once putting things into official offer documents they reduced the number to $8000. They had to go back and forth several times to get it back up to $8500.

This official offer also included a lot of fees. She was able to decline all of them except the $499 security fee and the $399 service fee. Taxes and title and registration were also added but I consider those outside of the dealerships responsibility. The $399 service fee is well above industry average, but the $499 security fee is a straight scam. (for those counting at home this is almost $900 in fees). In very small print on their website they do list these fees. After talking to the sales manager he claims that they are unable to make these fees more clear on the website due to the capabilities of the website service that they use. He also claims that they cannot just add this to the listed price due to Wisconsin Law.

$499 ($500) Scam: Zeigler is installing a LoJack system on all of their vehicles and listing it as a Security Fee. They will let you get to the dealership and go through test drives before they let you know. If you ask them to remove this system and the fee, they will tell you they “cannot”. It is very easy to remove, it is attached to the back of the OBD2 port in the driver’s foot well. We have absolutely no use for this device. This Hyundai comes with Bluelink which can do the same thing but is harder to unplug/defeat. They said the only way to not get this is to not buy the vehicle. However they forced her to sign that it’s optional to move forward with the sale.

They will try to tell you that this hardware is required, or that all of the dealerships are doing it. It is only required to do business with Zeigler. The good dealerships are not doing this.

Ultimately, my wife did buy the vehicle and there have been no issues yet. In general she was treated with dignity and respect by most of the staff. 7 hours of driving and a full day of arguing was too much to go home empty handed over a $499 fee.

Unfortunately, everything they are doing is legal. It’s just shady and unethical.

This review will likely get met with a canned response from Zeigler offering to "make things right" as they have done with all of the other people that have complained. Before writing this review I talked with several people. The sales manager told me that the only way out of the security fee was to return the vehicle. There is no intention to “make things right” for anyone but themselves.
