Botched Catalytic Converter Replacement
I wouldn’t trust this outfit with anything more complicated than an oil change. On July 5, 2018 I had Jefferson Auto Service North replace the catalytic converter and associated oxygen sensors in my 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The replacement was deemed necessary because the relevant “Check Engine” light had been on and did not stay off when the trouble code was cleared. After the replacements, Check Engine lights again came on with codes indicating “oxygen sensor slow response” or “catalytic converter inefficiency”. The Jeep was returned to Jefferson Auto Service North numerous times from August 2018 to March 2019. During these returns exhaust system leaks were repaired; exhaust system piping was rebent; 2 after market oxygen sensors were replaced with original equipment oxygen sensors; sensor wiring was thoroughly examined; oxygen sensor positions were reversed to check for sensor malfunction. After each attempted correction the Check Engine lights would stay off for 20 to about 200 miles before returning. The service technician eventually suggested that wiring or the DCM (main computer) was the source of the repeat Check Engine light and associated codes. During the week of March 11, 2019 computer diagnostics were run while operating the vehicle to attempt to determine which. This diagnostic effort was inconclusive. At that time the Jefferson Auto Service North personnel threw up their hands and suggested that I take the vehicle to a Jeep dealer stating, “maybe they have diagnostic capability we don’t have”. The Jeep dealer quickly determined that there were significant exhaust system leaks. Ultimately the catalytic converters and associated piping were changed by the dealer. In the 6 weeks since this change was made I have driven the Jeep over 1,200 miles with no “Check Engine” lights and I conclude that Jefferson Auto Service North’s ineffective work was the only cause of these extended problems.
