Misdiagnosis and worst experience for transfer case repair
I’m extremely disappointed with my experience regarding my 2020 Hyundai Tucson and a transfer case leak.
I brought my vehicle to the dealership because of a transfer case issue. I was given two options: replace the transfer case or have it resealed. I was told the reseal would work and would hold for a while, so I chose the reseal and paid approximately $1,600 out of pocket using financing.
Unfortunately, the leak started immediately after the repair and never stopped. I had to return to the dealership four separate times within the same week for the same issue. I was later told in writing that the reseal had caused a major transmission leak. After further inspection, I was then told that the transfer case itself was damaged and had a severe leak, and I was asked to pay an additional $554 toward the replacement.
What made this situation even more frustrating was that the dealership kept my vehicle for approximately 45 days. During this time, the leak had become severe enough that fluid had gotten throughout the vehicle, and I continued dealing with strong fumes and an odor coming from the vehicle. I was told to drive the vehicle a few thousand miles to allow the smell to “burn off.” Even after the dealership supposedly addressed the issue following my fourth visit, the smell remained. I was then told to bring the vehicle back for a fifth time so they could power wash it because of the remaining odor.
I also provided my warranty information to the dealership before payment and before the repair was performed. I was told that my warranty did not cover the transfer case, which led me to pay approximately $1,600 out of pocket. I later learned that the warranty did cover the repair.
I have kept my invoices, warranty documentation, and written communications regarding what I was told and what occurred after the repair.
This experience has been extremely frustrating. I trusted the dealership to properly diagnose my vehicle, accurately explain my repair options, properly review my warranty coverage, and correct the problem after I paid for the repair. Instead, I experienced repeated visits, a vehicle that remained at the dealership for approximately 45 days, continued leaking, persistent fumes and odor, conflicting explanations regarding the source of the problem, and significant out-of-pocket expenses.
The most concerning part for me was having to repeatedly return for the same unresolved issue after paying for the original repair, while also being given different explanations about what was happening with my vehicle.
I’m sharing my experience so other customers understand the importance of getting everything in writing, independently reviewing their warranty coverage, asking questions when the diagnosis changes, and keeping every invoice, warranty document, and written communication.
I hope the dealership takes situations like this seriously and recognizes the financial and personal impact that repeated unsuccessful repairs and inaccurate warranty information can have on a customer.
