Before the tow, my husband specifically called and asked **twice** how much it would cost just to **look at** the vehicle. The employee’s response was simply, “Bring it in and I can take a look.” My husband asked again, “But how much does it cost to look at it?” and was told, “I’m not sure, we’re not busy, bring it in and I can let you know. ” At no point were we told there would be a diagnostic fee.
After about 15 minutes, they diagnosed a bad radiator and quoted nearly **$1,000** for the repair.and that was with a AAA discount. I immediately declined and arranged through AAA to have my van towed to my mechanic in Toledo.
When I told the employee I wasn’t having the repair done there, I was informed there would be a **$140 diagnostic fee**. When I explained that we had specifically called ahead to ask about the cost to inspect the vehicle, his response was essentially that he didn’t know who told us that and then reduced the fee to **$120**.
My issue isn’t that a shop charges a diagnostic fee—some do (that’s why we call ahead of time) My issue is the lack of transparency. We specifically asked before bringing the vehicle in because we wanted to avoid surprises, and we were never told there would be a charge. Had they been upfront, we would have made a different decision.
For anyone considering this shop, DONT!!! , my mechanic in Toledo completed the same repair for about **$300 less** than the quote I received here.
