2018 GMC All Terrain V6, 4wd, 8 speed auto, Crew Cab
We acquired this truck new in 2018. This is our primary transportation. The combination of the V6 gasoline, direct injected, non-turbo engine and the 8 speed auto trans makes the truck relatively economical to drive. city will be an average of about 18 MPG or better if you are gentle on the accelerator pedal. Highway will be up to 25 MPH at 65 - 70 on flat ground using cruise control. We drove from Simi Valley to Merlin Oregon. Had to use 4WD from Redding, CA on. Average mileage for the 1,500 mile round trip was 21 MPH. Our cruise speed on Interstate 5 was a bit faster than local freeway speeds. I consider this excellent milage for a 4WD and about 500 miles of the trip was with the 4X4 engaged.
The truck rides nice for a 4X4, it's quite. The V6 has lots of power and the truck is pretty quick. It does well in the sand for factory stock tires. We trailer our side by side to the desert so we have pulled the trailer through some soft sand around the Dove Creek area. Unfortunately the V6 is no longer available. The later version is a turbo inline 4 cylinder. I'll pass on that. In my opinion the 4 cylinder isn't going to hold up because it will have to work too hard to do the job. Later in this review I'm asked if I would recommend a 2018 Canyon to a friend. Yes I would recommend one if it has the V6 engine. MY OPINION: A smaller 4 cylinder turbo charged engine is going to perform similar to the V6. HOWEVER, the life span of the smaller turbo charged engine will likely be shorter due to increased stresses, increased combustion pressures and temperatures. My V6 runs fine on 87 octane, the Turbo engines usually want 91 Octane. EXPERIENCE: I had a 4 Cylinder Turbo BMW X3 AWD. An awesome vehicle at approx 40,000 miles it needed about $7,000 of repairs. It ran fine but was starting to smoke. My mechanic told me this was common for the turbo cars.
