10 stars from me
If you want a truly honest, zero-pressure mechanic, go see Mr. Kool's Auto. I brought my 2003 Subaru Baja (automatic) to them after a botched DIY attempt at replacing a rear O2 sensor left it broken in the exhaust pipe. Instead of immediately pushing me into a massive replacement, they tried the most economical fix first by welding a new threaded bung onto my original catalytic converter to try and save the part.
When that didn't clear the Check Engine Light, we discovered the cat itself was actually dead. They ordered a new one and took care of the full replacement. I told them no rush since they had to wait on the part, and they still had it done in just 4 days. When I went to pick it up the first time, the shop was absolutely slammed. Even though I didn't mind waiting at all, the owner kept checking in on me, apologized profusely for the delay, and treated my time with incredible respect.
To top it all off, they recommended a nearby smog shop to get my California certification. The smog tech noticed my dashboard's CEL bulb wasn't illuminating during a pre-check and didn't charge me a dime for the heads-up. He confirmed the emissions monitors were 100% ready and it would pass as soon as the bulb was fixed (which I did yesterday!). It is rare to find a mechanic with this much integrity, let alone a whole network of recommended shops that treat people the same way. The mechanic was incredibly cool, took the time to talk shop with me, and earned a customer for life.
