Best EV of 2025

After doing my market research, including the comparative review by Car & Driver, I chose the Ioniq 5. After driving now approaching 8K miles, I'm even more certain. The learning curve is steep - there are lots of features included in its digital interface. I've never fallen in love with a car, but... had to give him a name - EVGreyBoy. This car cares a lot and shows it, keeping car & driver safe.

This could be my favorite car so far, and I've had a few

This is my first fully electric vehicle with any significant range. I had a Mitsubishi i-MiEV that had a range of about 70 miles for 10 years, and I have a Chevy Volt PHEV that can get the first 50 miles on electric, then it switches to hybrid. I've always admired the look of the Ioniq 5, and with the EV credit running out, the time seemed right. They were smart to lower the MSRP after the expiration, and hopefully this works for sales. I have about 1300 miles on the car so far, and I've taken a couple of long trips that required charging away from home. I'm very pleased with the range, comfort, and handling. There is a lot of personalization available in the menus, so it takes some reading to understand what everything is, and set up all the features to your liking. The screens are great. The HUD is great, showing surrounding traffic, nav, blindspots, lane hold and change. All the HUD is missing is what song is playing. The Highway Driving Assist (I think that's what HDA stands for) is awesome. Lane holding is way better than my Volt, and the lane change feature is nice. Wireless carplay is great. Fast charging is great, and one of the reasons I leased this car. I've charged at about 150kw with EA chargers, and about 110kw with Tesla chargers. It's great to be able to adjust charging limits, both percentage to charge to, and kw limit, which I think is good for avoiding idle time at a charger. Cons: The automatic proximity liftgate open is too sensitive. I'm debating whether to turn it off. The built-in wireless charger overheats the phone and charging stops prematurely. The factory wiper blades stink (replaced with Bosch). The top 8 inches of the rear window are "captive" under the spoiler. It seems this area requires manual cleaning.

good car, software and user experience stand to be improved

The vehicle feels and drives great. Nice torque, roomy interior, excellent sound system, ok controls, ok hvac. However there are some software improvements without which the user experience is lacking. The biggest complaint is that the i-break setting keeps being 'forgotten' every time the car goes in reverse or driving mode changes or vehicle gets turned off and on. Every time I get into my vehicle I have to remember to flip the lever, otherwise the car doesn't drive like I expect. It's very annoying The regen-breaking level will stay 'remembered' when vehicle gets turned off and on, but not if I switch drive modes to snow and back to regular. Also, after I turn off the car, my mode gets reset to Normal, even if I prefer to drive in Sport. Why aren't my preferred i-pedal/regen/drive-mode settings remembered under the driver profile? Second complaint is that there is no way to turn the car on/off from remote. I have to remember to hit the off button. Tesla makes it really easy where you walk away and car turns off, windows close, doors lock. On ioniq I have to do each of these things manually, and in correct order. If I turn the car off and start opening the door, the windows stop closing. That's crazy. I have to climb back into the car, turn the car on, just to close windows, then turn off again. That's crazy. Why isn't there a remote button that will just turn everything off and close windows and lock doors? The passive artificial sound that the vehicle makes while driving is annoying, and there are no user settings to change it's pitch or volume. I have to turn on the radio just so that I don't have to hear it. The connection to the phone is mostly good, but once in a while it will randomly switch out of my phone call to music and then back to phone call and then back to music. It's weird, but doesn't happen consistently. The other werid thing is that the infotainement system doesn't display what song is currently playing, just what radio station is playing. You have to click on the song to see a popup with the song/band titles, but that popup blocks the rest of the information on the display.

Great range, smooth ride, frustrating entertainment system

The interface for XM/FM radio, Apple CarPlay, and native Hyundai functions (maps) is terrible. It's hard to establish presets for favorite stations, and a multi-click process each time the car is started to reach that list/menu. There needs to be better instructions (a good video?) for new buyers to help with this process, if it turns out the interface can't be streamlined or better customized. I just think the system is so complex that there is indeed a better way, but I can't find it.

Ioniq 5 Limited RWD

My family has been the owner of this vehicle for almost 6 months. So this is a very limited time frame for this review. We took delivery in the summer months and the vehicle has been great. There is plenty of space for our enjoyment. The vehicle is loaded with features which are a plus. The vehicle feels stable and the ride feels smooth. The cabin feels like a larger suv which is a plus. Charging the vehicle is also very easy and with the addition of the nacs port, there are multiple charging options. Overall we are enjoying the experience.

AC controls are difficult to see in daylight

The AC control panel in this car includes a tinted lens with "Warm-Blue" illumination which is an idiotic combination if your goal is to actually SEE the controls in daylight! It causes severe glare and is a huge distraction when driving.

Great car, tons of features

I really like this car. It handles much more comfortably than its biggest competitor, has tons of space, and so far seems to be built well. It’s loaded with features in the SEL trim, and even the SE is a good value. The limited seemed like too much stuff for me but I did miss out on the ventilated seats and 360 camera. The car rides very well and is comfortable. I like the look. Most items feel good quality. The door panels rattle a bit at highway speed. Nothing is wearing prematurely yet. I am getting the advertised range and the motor has plenty of power. Only major dislike is the touch capacitive ac controls. They are nearly invisible in bright light, and touch just doesn’t work as well as physical buttons. The heated seat controls are oddly located so you have to look away from the road to use them, but I’m glad they’re buttons and not touch. The Hyundai app is not great. Feels like it was designed in a rush and is not very stable. Looks and works like a ten year old app.

So far in two months, I really like almost everything about the 2025 Ioniq 5. Only small complaints are the key fob and the storage next to the driver's seat.

Could be better

I've only had this vehicle for three months, so time will tell about overall build quality. The main reason I chose this vehicle is the availablilty of adjustable lumbar support in both front seats (although it should be 4-way not just 2-way), almost impossible to find in most vehicles. It only won out over the Ford Mach E because of a smoother ride and slightly better responsiveness. My other car is a Tesla and there is no comparison in many features. The steering wheel needs to adjust more to accommodate various drivers. That said, it did fine on a trip to New New England, but the placement of the charging port is awkward, especially since most charging stations are still Tesla. The programming leaves a lot to be desired, common things to adjust are buried in menus that don't make sense or are hard to find and better frunk space would be useful. Also need have at least one usb-a port instead of my having to buy a new cable or usba-usbc adapter.
