I lost my vehicle because of a botched, should have been simple, recall
Our Toyota Tundra was taken into their service shop on Thursday June 15th and left for a "mandatory" air bag recall. We left town to go camping and so had it picked up by a friend that next Monday evening. He informed me by phone that when driving it away from the lot the gauges started jumping. I assumed there was some minor glitch that happened while in the shop and that it would be resolved upon our return. We picked the truck up on June 25th after we got back in town. I drove it about 3 miles to get it home, as we were planning on taking it back to them the next day. When making the turn off of Hwy 99 towards our house the truck died. Though not in a safe place I was forced to pull over as nothing (not even the horn) was working. We called their front desk person at their office who told us to have it towed back to Lithia, though we were only about 1/2 mile from home. While trying to reach a tow service we noticed flames dropping from under the hood. Pretty frightened we/and others called the fire dept. Neighbors with hoses sprayed the truck until the fire dept arrived to put it completely out. The fire dept then called a tow service as they deemed it hazardous and a Towing service arrived, taking it to their shop until Lithia’s shop was open on Monday. Once the Towing co. drove it over to them it was refused by their service manager who then stated Lithia had no responsibility for it.
We talked to the GM, who after some discussion told us he’d have it towed in and try to “make everyone happy”. Two weeks later he told us there was nothing he could do, that it wasn’t their fault, just a “coincidence” that after 7 years of never once having a single significant problem, less then 10 miles out of his shop and after being worked on by his mechanics, it started on fire. Now we have a dead truck and they refuse to make it right.
