Best car I've ever owned

I bought this vehicle new in 2003 and have driven it ever since. Other than a new set of tires, routine oil changes, and regular maintenance, I have not had any trouble with it. It is well built and comfortable to drive. I could wish for better gas mileage--around 18 in the city, 26 highway. Getting in and out is a breeze, especially when I'm transporting family with mobility issues. No climbing up or sinking down. Visibility is great. The cargo area is large--I've even loaded the back with wood. The interior is well designed and has all the features that I need (I never thought I'd use the compass feature built into the rearview mirror but have checked it many times!) The engine delivers plenty of zip when needed but is otherwise just reliable. Reliable is so important to me and this car has proved to be just that over the last 11 years.

A remarkable vehicle.

This is a remarkable vehicle. I give it normal service and upkeep and have never had the vehicle give me a moment's trouble. I have never had to take it to a repair garage. It has reliably carried me wherever I need to go, in summer and winter, great traction and hugs the road comfortably.

XLS Model

This is our replacement for a 2003 model 13 years after purchasing the first one. We looked and drove other used SUV's in the price range and surprised ourselves with our choice. This model year is solidly built in Japan and is a steady work horse. With a four cylinder engine, it doesn't win races but gets decent mileage for the vehicle size. As a daily driver it's very comfortable but rethink if you're taking it on long trips as the front occupants would like better, powered seats. Very roomy, we've hauled 8 foot lengths of lumber inside with doors and windows closed. We've found that a good deal of maintenance can be performed by the owner and saves money. They tend to rust out behind the rear door wheel wells at this age, but if you catch it soon enough.... The XLS is an AWD vehicle with 5 passenger, heated leather, side air bags, sunroof and a compact spare inside the passenger compartment instead of under it. And there's storage compartments (open and hidden) throughout the car. When rating the characteristics, I took into account the vehicle age vs. today's cars.

2004 Mitsubishi Outlander

The 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander is probably the most underrated vehicle of its class. My Outlander is an AWD and it has out lasted some Honda CRV's from that same year. There's not much in terms of the interior or even the exterior, but the engine will last forever. As of right now, I am embarking on 120,000 miles and all I have done was some simple scheduled maintenance, such as oil changes and recently, installed new brake pads. Speaking of brakes, it is kind of soft, squishy brake and that can be a problem if you are used to a more firm grip on the brakes. Whenever I had to slam on the brakes though, it stops immediately. The ride is smooth and is pretty decent for some off-road driving. Cargo space is pretty average, but it is enough for what I need for. Acceleration could be better. It does seem to take its time to pick up. Gas mileage could also be a bit better, but it is from 2004.
