"Steering Coupler Repair"
After discussion with Zach, he confirmed that the Steering Coupler was indeed covered by the Hyundai Extended Warranty. After visiting Pearson Hyundai to verify the steering problem, I had the Coupler replaced at an independent Garage. Zach advised that I should submit a claim to Hyundai reimbursement of these costs. This is good Customer Service, and I greatly appreciate Zach and Pearson Hyundai for pointing this out. Thank you for the positive outcome...

"Elantra Power Steering Coupler Repair"
The Hyundai electric power steering assist motor has an soft compound star bushing ("coupler" in Hyundai speak) between the electric motor and the steering column shaft. This bushing degrades over time and must be replaced. Symptoms include steering clunking, EPS and or ESC dash lights on. The coupler has a cost of under $20, the repair at the dealer is claimed to require steering column replacement at a cost well above $1000. It is a labor intensive job of approximately 5 hours which does NOT equate to the very expensive dealer estimate. Service writers know of this persistent problem across the Hyundai line, yet do not alert customers when they arrive with the typical steering coupler symptoms. Hyundai and the national dealer associations know of the persistent problem and should address these necessary repairs in a more cost effective manner.
