Military Veterans Beware
Military Veterans Beware. I ‘m 21-year retired Army Sergeant First Class that needed a more comfortable vehicle for my bad back. My wife and I saved up money to be able to pay cash for a Van. We found 2015 Nissan Quest on a third-party website for Five Star Hyundai of Macon that is 2 hours away from Phenix City, AL. First, I found out from the salesman that the price advertised is the finance price and I would have to pay a higher price if I paid cash. My guess is they get big kickbacks from Banks when customers finance. Second, I was given an out the door price that appeared to be higher than expected. I talked to the Sales manager Keith about the price and he stated that he was collecting taxes for Alabama. As an Army Soldier I have purchased many vehicles in different states and have never had any dealerships collect taxes for another state. I will explain later why this is an issue. Third, I asked the dealership if I paid them could they deliver to me. I was told no they could not but I could pay a third party to deliver the van. While I was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC I had a dealership in Charlotte, NC drive my vehicle two and a half hours to my house. During this search for a vehicle, I had dealerships in Atlanta GA, Enterprise, AL, and Tennessee that agreed to deliver the vehicle free of charge. However, my wife liked the Quest over the Town and Country. So, we drove to Five Star Hyundai of Macon for this van with a cashiers check for over 12,000. The salesman John was very helpful and polite. However, I was paying cash and do not understand why the finance department was playing the waiting game. They over estimated Alabama taxes required but promised to send me a refund check because I paid with a cashier’s check. I have not received any money yet. The Quest had a DVD player that could not operate because the remote was missing. The sales manager agreed to order a remote and he give us a WE OWE- Delivery confirmation sheet. I started calling the salesman a week later for an update on the remote. He would tell me that Keith the Sales manager was working on it. I later start calling Keith the sales manger and he stated the remote was order and then he stop returning my many calls for an update. Finally, I able to reach him on 30 Dec 2023. He stated he was going to order the remote on 2 Jan 2024 and talk to accounting about the tax money they were supposed to pay to Alabama. He also said he would update me on Tuesday. I waited for him to call me but he never did. I called on Thursday and was told he is on vacation will not be back until next week. A man’s word means everything to me. If you say you are going to do something, do it. I believe the temporary tag will expire and we will have to park the Van before I hear from Five Star Hyundai of Macon. If I was given the opportunity to pay my Alabama Tax and transfer my Disable veteran tag to my van I would have been register in Alabama by now. Two Army Values are Integrity and Honor. I wish Five Star displayed these two values. I am worried that the Airman at Robins AFB and the Soldiers at Fort Moore will share the same experience I did at Five Star. Military Veterans Beware
