Being from out of state and having to buy a car was hard in itself, but Gregg at Ron Tonkin was amazing and helped us fix out problem with little stress. If we lived in Portland we would definitely be a customer. San Diego is a little hard to get there! Thank you for everything.

Poor customer service, questionable automotive service.
My vehicle was recently left at Ron Tonkin Hyundai for a brake warranty issue following a 30,000 mile service. The service I received – both of the customer and automotive varieties – has given me serious cause for concern in returning here for further service. It should be noted that I purchased my vehicle from this dealership nearly 5 years ago and always received great service, but have noticed a steady decline in the last year. Here's my most recent experience.

When I called to set up the appointment and to explain the issue that my vehicle was experiencing, I had asked for a loaner vehicle. The service advisor said he didn't have one available, but would see what he could do about finding one for me or having someone give me a ride to work, and would get back to me before my appointment so I could make other arrangements. He never did get back to me, and when I dropped my vehicle off he wasn't present, the advisor that was there showed little interest in finding me a solution and instead said I could spend $25 a day on a rental from a partnered business. I received a call that afternoon from the original service advisor telling me that the issue my vehicle was experiencing was a warranty issue, and not related to the 30,000 mile service I received a month or some months prior. I dropped my vehicle off on a Friday, they were ordering the parts and my vehicle should be available for pick up on Tuesday.

When Tuesday arrived and I hadn't received a phone call by 4:00 (shortly before I would leave for work, would I have to call a cab to the dealership or go home?), I reached out to the dealership to see the status of my vehicle. Well, the parts only arrived at the warehouse so they'd arrive the following morning and be installed and ready for pick up that afternoon.

The same thing happened the next day, Wednesday: no call or notification at all until the late afternoon when I called them, and now only one part was present at the shop and the other was waiting at the warehouse "it'll be ready tomorrow afternoon."

Thursday, the exact same thing happens: I get no call, and eventually call them at 4:00 and the vehicle isn't ready "but will be tomorrow, is that okay?". It wasn't okay, but what could I really do?

Wouldn't you know it, when I call on Friday my vehicle isn't ready. The parts are installed and they've bled the system twice but it's still not working. At least we have progress. The technician was on lunch and was expected to try again when he returned, and I was assured I'd be given a call before they closed at 6:00 about my vehicle. For whatever reason, I did not receive a call before they closed, but I did receive one shortly afterwards telling me that my vehicle was ready and that they apparently didn't know that my vehicle's braking system was somehow integrated with or operated by a computer, and as such needed to be bled in a particular order.

I picked up my vehicle a week after dropping it off, with 3 missed status-updates and missed delivery dates. The advisor clearly understood that there had been a breakdown in their handling of the situation, but he made no appology or mention of it, simply giving me a free car wash ticket and saying "I know it's not much, but here's a free car wash."

The next day, my vehicle wouldn't start. I thought my battery had died, so went to get a jump. However, my battery had full charge. The issue wasn't with the battery, somehow the positive battery terminal and connectors were loose. A simple jiggle would get the power to come on. I immediately called to bring up the issue and get it solved, as this clearly wasn't right. An appointment was made, and when I arrived at the shop I wasn't treated like a customer that they had failed just days before, I was treated like an inconvenience for bringing something as simple as a battery issue to the shop. Did I know I could just tighten the terminal down and it would solve the problem? No, but I had a good idea it was related. What I did know, however, was that the vehicle should not have left the shop in that condition.

I work in customer service, I understand that when supply chain issues arise there really isn't much that you can do. But the one thing you can do is give good customer service to make sure your customer understands what is happening, and that you're working to get a good solution. No effort was made to make things right, just as there was little to no effort made to contact me beyond the initial "it should be ready by Tuesday". Why did I have to call the dealership every day to find the status of my vehicle was being pushed back yet again? To add on to that, why did the technician not know the intricacies of my vehicle's braking system, a vehicle that I bought from them? And the final straw, the battery. This made me think that they aren't paying enough attention to the vehicles, or at least my vehicle, in their service department.

My vehicle was returned to me in a condition that was not safe to drive, putting me in danger while driving from their shop (unknowingly), and again putting me in danger while I returned it to their shop (knowingly). The vehicle died twice in operation, luckily only on side streets with little to no traffic, but if I had been unlucky enough to have it happen as I was merging onto the highway or making a turn across oncoming traffic, I might not be writing this negative review.

I will not be returning to Ron Tonkin Hyundai for any more service, and instead, will be calling Hyundai to find a different Hyundai dealership to get my vehicle serviced and/or fix any more warranty issues that may arise.
