Fun car, unless you're really tall.

It's my car and I love it. My girlfriend, not so much. She's 6'2" and the driver's seat doesn't go back far enough for her to comfortably fit. The passenger seat is fine for her. If you and yours are in the taller 25% of the population, you might want to get a test fit before you take a test drive. Apart from that, I've found the car very fun to drive. Sport mode makes it accelerate like a motorcycle (I have the non-turbo model). It runs flat and smooth at speed. The paddle shifters I don't use much.

Transmission

I don't like the transmission that they put in my car they call it a double clutch transmission I would call it a confused transmission. It doesn't shift very well upon acceleration. Also, the seats are not very comfortable for a larger people.

It's almost there.

Let me preference by saying that I have the RSpec, so it does without some features that the standard turbo has such as heated seats, sunroof, and navigation. Of those features, heated seats and a sunroof are the only things I find myself missing, but I forewent them for the sake of a lower payment. The touch screen works well, and the stereo is adequate for all but the most bass intensive music. This is my first car with a back up cam, and I am so glad these are becoming mandated equipment. Backing up through the tiny rear window would be a little stressful I think. The camera projects a distance overlay to help with parking, but it does not project trajectory which would have been a nice feature, but for the price point, its nice just to have a back up cam. If you want to talk performance, this is where the Veloster's price point holds it back the most. Having come from a car that had both an independent rear suspension, and a limited slip differential, I find myself missing both every time I take a tight turn at speed, or accelerate out of one. The aftermarket provides some remedies for these problems, but I am glad to see the Gen2 Velosters fix both these short comings properly. The 1.6L GDI Turbo engine is a marvel for what it is. 201 hp and 197 lbft is a lot for such a little car with so little displacement. Is it enough? Hell no, but is it ever? What you do get from such a small engine is 33mpg as long as you don't let the boost rise too much, and the real icing on that cake is that you get it on 87 octane pump gas. Premium is unnecessary which is amazing considering most turbocharged cars require at least 91 out of the box. All these figures compare favorably imo to the only other vehicle operating in the same space as the Veloster Turbo, the Ford Fiesta ST. The Fiesta ST gives up a little bit of power to the VT at only 197 hp keeping it technically out of the 200 club. Whats more is that the Fiesta requires 93 octane to get all of its ponies while the VT is happy sipping 87. Another symptom of the Veloster's price point is the lack of a boost gauge, an unforgivable sin imo for any performance minded vehicle with forced induction. Again this seems to be a matter of price point since neither the Fiesta ST nor the 500 Abarth have one either. The performance of the Veloster Turbo/RSpec is competitive for its segment, but I can't help but feel another 20 hp in addition to a LSD would really help the car earn a reputation as a legitimate hot hatch. I have no complaints about the slick 6 speed. My RSpec came with a crisp short throw B&M shifter, a feature that has since become standard on all manual turbo models. Is the automatic any good? No idea, but in my opinion your doing it wrong if you're getting your sporty car fitted with a slush box. As it stands, the Velsoter is widely seen as more style than substance, a criticism I don't entirely disagree with. Speaking of style, there is no arguing that the Veloster is a beautiful car. It has more style than cars costing twice as much. Its loud exterior may put off some people, but for anyone who wants a sporty looking car at an economy price, you really can't do better. The large open mouthed grill, the muscular bulging rear fenders, and the over-sized center mounted exhaust outlets are particular favorites of mine. I wish the outlets were actual tailpipes, but that again is a problem the aftermarket can solve. RSpec's like my own also come with a loud cherry red and black upholstery that adds a cherry (no pun intended) on top of the loud styling. Bonus points if you get your Veloster in black like I did. The contrast is preferable to the white and blues colors which comprise the only 2 alternative colors for the RSpec. All in all the Veloster Turbo / RSpec is a neat little car that splits the difference between hot hatch and sports coupe. It manages to look several thousand dollars more expensive than it is with unique and aggressive styling, and also manages to hide its cheap price point from anyone not looking for it. I wish it had four doors instead of 3, but if that is a deal breaker for you, there is always the aforementioned Fiesta ST. you'll give up some power, a back up cam, and a boat load of styling... but you'll get that 4th door. A car like this would have been a 16 year old me's dream, and even at 30 I am grateful for how much I get for comparatively so little. I see this car as a great daily driver for a young professional who has little to no kids, or as fun little 3rd car to complement the minivan and the crossover already parked in the driveway.

The car is very responsive, handling is superior, pick up is awesome for a small car great gas mileage, comfortable interior, full leather, slap stick, paddle shift option, or just regular automatic, many options on this model, including proximity start, blue Link (similar to OnStar) but alot more features

2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo 2 years ownership review

Me and my wife, both like the design, styling , the 3 door concept which very practical (my son and sometimes my occasional friends don't find it difficult to settle down on the back seats) . Certainly we liked the color (vitamin C - Orange) and the tech pack's feature in this car. It's certainly doesn't run a as smooth as a Subaru (my 2nd car) however it's not meant to be run that way. I have been using the car for almost 2 years now and i admit that I still love it. It runs stiff, you can feel that from the steering wheel and when you have cracks on the roads. I have observed it takes while when you try to accelerate it from a stand still, but once the revs are around 3000, it just goes on, and one more observation is the gear shifts in auto mode, it's too quick so you don't really enjoy. It has very practical cargo space for a weekend out and we loved the car as is without any modifications.

My little roadster

Pros- Love my car. Tight steering. Seats hug my body. Flashy style. Easy to park since it's small. Nice stereo. Heated seats help me cope with winter. Lots of zip thanks to the turbo. People are always stopping to look and to ask me what kind of car I have. Cons- Low profile tires lose air in winter, rough ride on Michigan roads.

2016 Hyundai Veloster

I have enjoyed the veloster with the main exception during the summer months I smell gas fumes and do not feel safe. I understand this is a design issue and the dealership was somewhat helpful but not satisfactory.

Nice vehicle, inventive design, fair gas mileage.

This vehicle does not get as good gas mileage as others that are the same size. Other than that, this is an inventive design that makes it very useful for an elderly person who needs to transport bulky items to and from their rental properties. The steering wheel cannot be elevated enough for a fairly short person (I'm 5 foot 8 inches tall) to enter the vehicle without snagging their knees on the steering column. The engine stalls at stop lights.

Standard, turbo, panoramic sunroof and heated seats

I started to look for a car that was a standard, turbo, had the sunroof and heated seats, but every used car was well over $30,000 - except for the Veloster! I was very excited to find a two year old car with 18,000 miles that cost $18,000. I wish the turbo had a bit more pick-up and I have noticed that the tires slip or skip a bit when I am really leaning on the turbo, but the car is fun to drive. I like it's unique design, gas mileage, and pep. I'm so glad that I found an affordable car with a standard transmission (6 speed) and turbo boost that I enjoy driving.

Hyundai Veloster is Great Value

This vehicle is a great value and has great performance. I have had minor issues which I figure is a thing with any new vehicle. The car is very stylish, very comfortable, performs well under normal or inclement conditions, and has great storage space, especially when folding down the rear seats. I previously had a Hyundai Tiburon GT V6 which to any who know it, was a very stylish and sporty vehicle as well as fun to drive. While the Veloster might not be as sporty looking as a Tiburon or Genesis, it's still a fantastic vehicle at a very reasonable price. My only issues is that this year wasn't designed for Apple CarPlay, though I was able to update the system to support it, it runs somewhat slow and requires your phone to be connected via USB instead of simply connected via Bluetooth, and that I wish the fuel economy was a little better, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to accept as everything else is great. This is the 3rd Hyundai vehicle I have owned and will continue to recommend Hyundai and most likely this will not be my last Hyundai. Hyundai offers fantastic warranties on their vehicles which offers great peace of mind to a buyer. Purchasing this car was the best dealership experience I've ever had, and I've had many. I will continue to visit the dealership I purchased from for service and will continue to recommend them highly. AAA+

Awesome When the Turbo Works

The turbo on my 2016 Veloster, which was purchased brand-new, sometimes doesn't engage at all, or it stops working just as I am attempting to pass someone. Then, when the engine is restarted, it will re-set itself and the turbo will work again. Service technicians have been unable to diagnose the problem, however, they suspect that it may have something to do with a sensor.

Turbo lag.

Turbo lag hesitation is mildly annoying. Acceleration should be more immediate. Low end torque is appreciated. Seat comfort is good with good lateral support. Lack of spare tire is disturbing, at least a small spare tire should be supplied with each Veloster. Either that or equip car with run flat tires or self sealing tires.

my son loves his very first car

I purchased this vehicle after my Elantra was rear ended, the plan was to get another one, but because this was eventually going to be handed down to my son, he nudged me into a Veloster. I drove the little guy for two years and fell in love. it's a very nice looking car with some pep, "when using the sport's mode". I will be buying some quiet tires to help with the road noise, but for the price i cannot complain. I have not had to do any serious maintenance on it other than oil change, and add a drop-in "sports air filter". I would recommend the Veloster tor anyone, and it makes a good first car for a youngster.

Excellent buy

I love just about everything when it comes to this car. From the amount of space it has to all the features including the navigation. However, there are a few down sides. There seems to be a lack of power when shifting gears in acceleration in my manual, the car in a sense shutters. Also the plastic fin on the roof of the car just came off one day while I was driving. Made it seem like poor quality.

veloster turbo

I like everything about the car as far as the way it runs, rides, comfort. Only issue is the way it handles in the snow. Spins out frequently from a stop, slides a bit on turns, and stopping can be difficult, nerve racking

Veloster enthusiasm

We really like and enjoy driving our Veloster. The fuel economy, handling and interior quality are great. We had a rough start with Lithia Hyundai of Reno at the sales and delivery level. We still carry some bitterness as a result of the purchase process. I am not going to document the reason for our displeasure here again, we have gone into detail before both at the dealership and factory level and never received any callbacks or expression of concern, this leaves us with the feeling that no one cares. We would probably consider another Hyundai but would be exttemely cautious. In looking at the category levels for rating there are 2 that stand out as issues and they are rated accordingly. "BUILD QUALITY" ,hard to judge it appears that the dealer may have harmed or abused the exterior finish. We never did get a fix for the exterior issues. "VALUE FOR THE MONEY" we test drove a 2017 Veloster with Turbo and knew that this is what we wanted the only reason for not puchasing that day was the color my wife desired the Red model. The dealership found a red model available and drew up the paperwork including a trade in. When the vehicle arrived we were appalled at the condition of the car it was filthy dirty inside and out and had scratches and wheel damage that we were told would be taken care of and we could return it for detailing. What happened next is unbelievable; we went in to finalize the paperwork and in the end we found out we were being delivered a 2016 model instead of a 2017. What a sham!

Fun Ride

I enjoy driving this little car. It has lots of leg room and good mileage. Not the smoothest ride - you'll feel the bumps - but I had read that before buying. Love the panoramic sunroof. Interior design is sporty.

Fun little hot hatch

I love my Veloster. While not necessarily a fast car, it is a fun car to drive especially with a stick shift. It is quick, loves to turn, and people always either compliment or need to ask me all kinds of questions about the car because of how unique it is. If you are into tuning, it is very easy to work on and modify. It does not take much to boost the fun factor as just a few bolt sons and tune can make it easily better than some of the bigger hatches like a Ford Focus ST. The Interior is very comfortable and roomy for such a small car. Plenty of trunk space for all your needs. The only downside is the fact these cars a little quirky. They have their little annoyances like laggy or inconsistent throttle response or a gearbox that does not always want to do what you tell it to do. It absolutely sucks to drive with traction control on because the slightest indication of wheel spin and the engine cuts off for a second. The throttle can be a bit jerky at times because of the stock intake design. Simple mods and tuning changes fix that and this is a car that typically you will want to improve as the factory version of the car is not the best of designs, especially because of the turbo GDI engine.

Veloster 2016

I love cars. I take exceptional care of my car and I enjoy driving. My Veloster is fun, sporty and just cute to look at. It only has one flaw that is awful! The blind spot on the front passenger side window area where the mirror sets in the door. It is really, really bad. You'd think it would be the minimal vision from the back window. It's fine. When I'm driving I have to make sure I move my head and body all around when looking for traffic/activity on the right front/side of my car. I have missed seeing, cars, bicycles, and people because of this blind spot. I actually counted how many seconds before the headlights of a car came into view that was traveling from a distance on my right. It was almost 3 full seconds. That's unacceptable. I've learned to over compensate and thoroughly check for activity on the right side of my car after almost running over a bicycle. Scared the crap out of both of us. So please be aware of this unacceptable blind spot.
