With basic maintenance and care the Jeep Cherokee will always get you home. I've literally had zero real problems until it was over 20 year old and they've all been simple electrical or old sensor related issues. Just swapped out and replaced. Other standard maintenance costs are basically due to wear and tear. In 2021 parts are just now starting to get difficult to find or more expensive than before but that could be because of the pandemic.
I've owned 5 Jeeps total in my life so far and 3 of them are still running. Two of them are Jeep Cherokee XJs and one of them is older than 1997. As long as they keep making parts and replacement body panels for rust these should keep going until the electric cars take over. And even then I'll try to keep them working if just for potential museum pieces.
Great vehicle overall.

Love my XJ!
This is my fourth Cherokee, and by far my fave! It's a 97 2-door, and her name is Scamp!

This is the best vehicle I have ever owned. It goes anywhere, the power train and 4wd system is almost unbreakable.

This is my 3rd Jeep Cherokee
I put over 600,000 miles on my previous two Jeeps. All you have to do is basic care and they're the best.
And like their advertising used to say."There's only one, JEEP!"
