A Phenomenal EV Ruined by Baytown Hyundai's Service & ICCU Defect

When the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is actually on the road, it is a fantastic electric vehicle. The ride is quiet, the charging speeds are incredible, and the design is unmatched. Unfortunately, the car's potential is entirely overshadowed by critical hardware defects and an abysmal customer service experience at Baytown Hyundai. The issues began at delivery. The dealership completely failed to provide the standard charging adapter with the vehicle. For a modern EV, the adapter is a fundamental necessity, not a supplementary accessory. The situation escalated from an annoyance to a major problem when the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) failed. The ICCU is responsible for managing the high-voltage battery and the 12-volt system, and its failure is a widespread defect across the Ioniq 5 lineup that can lead to a sudden loss of motive power while driving. After my vehicle threw the diagnostic codes for the charging control unit fault, it had to be towed in for a warranty repair. The car sat in the service lot for over a month. While waiting on backordered parts for a known recall issue is frustrating, the total lack of communication was unacceptable. For over four weeks, the service department held my car without providing a single proactive update. I was left completely in the dark regarding the status of a major high-voltage system replacement. This ICCU defect is serious enough that it has triggered a federal investigation and an active class-action lawsuit over allegations that the replacement units are just as defective as the originals. The Ioniq 5 is a great piece of engineering when it functions, but you are rolling the dice with the ICCU's reliability. Buy the car for the tech, but be prepared for a miserable dealership experience.

Amazing vehicle, and an amazing EV!

Hyundai did a lot of things right with the Ioniq 5. Amazing drive, comfortable, spacious and great looking, 800v arch.& NACS connector and REAR WIPER! Few things I wish they did differently. (1) Walk away lock for all configs is a must, with the door handles sticking out. (2) Allow battery SOC to be shared with Android Auto and Car Play. (3) Change the key fob!! It's huge and ugly as hell. Complete opposite of such a fine car. (4) I understand and appreciate the longer wheel base and the increased interior space, but God the turning radius sucks!

Hyundai Ioniq 5 - One year review

I do like driving this small SUV but there were 2 notable problems I've encountered during 1 year of leasing this vehicle: 1. The climate system is defective. The A/C will come on repeatedly in midwinter. Also, it will continually shift to "driver only" setting when 2 of us are in the car. We brought it in for service but they couldn't find the problem 2. The 12V battery became dead after about 10 months and the local Hyundai dealer made me wait 3 days before they could schedule the free repair. In addition to the above 2 problems, I'm quite concerned about the infamous reported problem of the ICCCU failing in these vehicles and the car stalling without notice. Fortunately this has not happened to us as yet but we are reluctant to take the car on long trips. Finally the electronic controls for finding and using a commercial charging station are confusing and not easy to use. Fortunately I'm able to charge our vehicle at home. I suggest you have a help line available to phone knowledgeable support staff who can explain some of the complex electronic controls. At the present time I was only able to find a phone number for someone to answer questions about the iPhone App.

Great car except for ICCU and battery defects

Love my Ioniq5 but feel very insecure about ICCU and battery issues. I’ve had to have it towed twice (and I’m 2 hours from closest dealer). Also very disappointed with customer care who committed to reimbursing me for rental car and it took 2 months to get reimbursed, despite being reassured over and over that it had been approved.

Of all the cars ever made, this is one.

Overall, a surprisingly good vehicle. Definetly better than I expected, having only driven a few Hyundai vehicles in the past. I have spent 30 years in the auto industry, from dealership technician all the way to my current role as an engineering manager for a large tier 1. I work with warranty and quality, and my exposure to Hyundai's reputation from those perspectives was certainly not great. That said, I thought the Ioniq5 had great specs and I was looking to sample the EV life, without giving any money to Tesla, so I gave it a chance. Its been a great car. I love the power and the range, its very quiet inside. Every time I give someone a ride they immediately notice the noise level and power, and I've had many "this is a Hyundai?" remarks.

Love my ioniq5

This car is so comfortable to drive. It’s very smooth and the acceleration is quick! I really enjoy driving this car. Just wish that it had a better turning radius. I often have to do 3 point turns and that is not a quick process in this car.

Reliable. Predictable. Fun.

The car is solid, reliable, and fun to drive. The user interface has a huge impact on your satisfaction. There is a good mixture of buttons and screen actions. In contrast to a certain German A car brand, this user interface is predictable, understandable, and intuitive. The charging system works very well, and the 250+ kW power capability makes charging fast—this was a major selling point for me. It can plug and charge with no extra steps (bills my card) at the charging station screen. It works with Tesla, EVGO, Electrify Am, and the one random Mercedes brand charger I used at a mall.

If you choose an Ioniq 5, you shall be blessed with: looks, roominess, performance, fast charging, a native Tesla port (and adapters for when you need them), a platform that Waymo chose to build on (years of service and support ahead), Hyundai's aggressive pricing to take market share, and their proven ability to build high quality cars at scale.

Most comfortable vehicle owned during 50 years of motoring.

During the 18 months and 14289 miles we have owned the 2025 Ioniq5 it has been the most comfortable vehicle we have owned in 50 years. It has been our only vehicle so we have depended on it 100%, which leads to the one criticism...earlier this month after opening the doors, we were unable to start the vehicle, the screens were dead. Fortunately, I had a jump-start device and was able to start the vehicle, and then drive to Walmart and replace the OEM regular battery with a compatible AGM battery. I suggest a future replacement for the Ioniq5, should have a user-facing alert when the 12 volt battery has deteriorated to a point it needs to be replaced.

Perfect peppy town car

We live in an urban and suburban area and the Ioniq5 fits our needs perfectly. It is very peppy, accelerating quickly and easily to merge with heavily travelled urban freeways, but quiet, very comfortable and spacious, easily accommodating weekly shopping, airport pick-ups and home improvement projects.

Poor Battery Life

Battery issues are persistent. Car has always concern with small battery being drained and dead.
