Faithful 2001 PT Cruiser

Our PT Cruiser was purchased new in fall of 2000 and has been an excellent vehicle. Safe on the road, comfortable, roomy, multiple seat configrations and very nice gas mileage. 16-years later, there have been no major issues (as in breakdowns) - routine maintenance, expected for any automobile has kept her in tip-top shape. However, given the "acid rain" from forest fires in our area and the hot summers, it is time for a new paint job - again, not surprising. All facets of the interior are in excellent condition as well. Because of the roominess, long road trips are pleasant and the great handling and weight of the car provides that extra safety on the road. Though she is becoming "long in the tooth" for a single-owner car, I doubt that I will ever trade her in - a second, newer car is in the near future, but the PT Cruiser will remain our old-faithful workhorse.

decent

This PT Cruiser...so far has been good to me. I had a newer one that was falling apart for reasons that the car was put together cheaply. MIne is a 2001 and I think it was better made than the newer ones. Would not have been my first choice had I had the money to buy something else. But the price was right and it gets me from A to B.

This is the best of my 34 autos

Perfect size, excellent handling, great seating position, just the right effort for steering and brakes, amazing hauling capacity, reasonable gas mileage and performance. My 16-year-old PT still has the original exhaust system, alternator, starter, FI system. The original battery lasted 12 years.

Faithful and Fun 2001 PT Cruiser - Cranberry Purple - Limited Edition with Luggage Rack

I purchased my 2001 PT in the fall of 2000 and have been absolutely delighted and remain impressed with this car (and I have owned a lot of cars in my lifetime). I am so pleased with my Cruiser, I have had it for 16 years and have decided to keep it rather than sell it or trade it in on another make/model. It is very comfortable to drive and to ride in whether in town or on a road trip), with plenty of head and leg room. It handles well and its size and weight provide extra safety. It's seat combination can be changed (different configurations including easily removing the back seats completely if desired) and is a great "mini-van" for hauling stuff. Maintenance has never been a big issue, other than for routine maintenance one does (or should do) on any car, and I am pleased with the gas mileage. I can't quite figure out why they stopped making this model :(

It's kind of the worst

We have had this car for about 3 years and have spent several thousand dollars in repairs... A good $1,000 or so about every 6 months. It seems like everything on this car has broken, we've worked on the coolant system multiple times, had several leaks in the oil line, had power steering issues, the alignment gets screwed up very easily, the dashboard has cracked and broken in several places, and have had to replace the battery several times. The part that makes all of these problems worse is that the way the engine is build is ridiculous, everything is on top of each other so that they could fit it under that tiny hood which just raises your labor costs on any repair ( labor alone usually starts at about $400 for anything done to this car)... We have a Honda Civic as well and it's expenses have only been a fraction of what we've put into this car. It also has the worst blind spots that I've had on any car.

Just had to have it.

Bought it in 2000. At the time there was a one year waiting list and dealers were reluctant to let me even test drive it. Saw a limited with all the bells and whistles, inferno red pearl, powder coated pearl wheels and paid a hefty price for it. 140,000 miles and 15 years later she still turns heads, but Limited was reintroduced in 07-08 ? I've been looking at the new Honda CRV because it most resembles the style and versatility of a Cruiser but I can't see paying for it when my ride is so cheap to keep. Follks, like any other car, if you maintain it , it'll be good to you.

The best overall auto I have had

Although I was initially attracted by the cool vintage looks, the '01 PT has turned out to be my favorite of 34 autos I've owned. Good visibility, excellent driving position and creature comfort, excellent handling, good mileage, in a perfect sized vehicle. The practicality of it needs some elaboration. Although a fun car, its carrying capacity is surprising, There is actually more for-and-aft room in the hatch area than in my Caravan. The rear seats, as everyone must know now, fold forward to carry large flat objects, or pop out entirely. With them out and the front passenger seat folded, 8' lumber can be carried. Acceleration is adequate, but certainly not startling. Astonishing to me is that the exhaust system, alternator, fuel injection, starter and water hoses have never been touched in fifteen years. The original battery lasted 12 years. I just replaced the cooling fan at 84,000 miles. The water pump and timing belt were replaced as maintenance items. Most repairs have been electrical in nature, and not disabling. In sum, I wouldn't change a thing about it. I wish they were still made.

My wife's car

My wife and I both like the car. Too bad they have been discontinued. This causes repair parts to be very expensive. My wife loves the size. She says it fits her just right.
