Review after using 1 year
After driving the Hyundai IONIQ 5 for a year, I can confidently say that it's a fantastic car with great value for money. It offers an excellent combination of technology, comfort, performance, and practicality. However, there is one significant drawback that becomes particularly noticeable during long-distance travel.
What I Love About the IONIQ 5:
1. Excellent Value for Money
The IONIQ 5 offers a premium driving experience without the premium price tag. The overall build quality, technology, spacious interior, and driving performance make it a great value proposition. It genuinely feels like you're getting more car for your money.
2. Ultra-Fast Charging – A Huge Advantage
One of the best features is its DC fast-charging capability. Being able to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 18 minutes under ideal conditions is a blessing during long road trips. When you find a compatible high-speed charger, the charging experience is incredibly convenient and makes a big difference compared to EVs with slower charging speeds.
3. Excellent Features and Technology
The IONIQ 5 is packed with impressive features. The driver-assistance systems, infotainment, digital displays, smart connectivity, and overall cabin design make everyday driving enjoyable. Hyundai has done an excellent job of combining technology with practicality.
4. Outstanding Driving Comfort
This is easily one of the strongest aspects of the IONIQ 5. The spacious cabin, comfortable seating, smooth acceleration, quiet ride, and stable handling make it a pleasure to drive. Whether it's daily commuting or highway driving, the comfort level is exceptional.
The Biggest Disappointment – Real-World Range
Despite all these positives, the biggest drawback is the range, particularly during extreme weather conditions and highway driving.
**Winter and Peak Summer Range:** In winter, the energy required for cabin heating and battery temperature management can significantly reduce the available driving range. Similarly, during peak summer, heavy air-conditioning usage affects efficiency. The difference between the advertised range and what you actually experience can be frustrating.
**Highway Efficiency:** Another major concern is how quickly efficiency drops at higher speeds. In my experience, driving above 55 mph noticeably increases energy consumption. At typical interstate speeds of 70–75 mph, the battery percentage can drop much faster than expected.
**Long-Distance Travel and Range Anxiety:** The combination of extreme temperatures and sustained highway speeds makes long-distance travel particularly challenging. Even though the IONIQ 5 supports exceptionally fast charging, you still need to plan charging stops carefully.
During winter and peak summer road trips, watching the battery percentage drop faster than anticipated can create genuine range anxiety. You may find yourself constantly monitoring the remaining range, adjusting your speed, or planning additional charging stops instead of simply enjoying the journey.
My Final Verdict:
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is an excellent EV for daily commuting, city driving, and moderate-distance trips. Its comfort, features, performance, and fast-charging capabilities make it a fantastic vehicle overall.
However, **for frequent long-distance highway travel, especially during winter and peak summer, the reduced real-world range is a significant limitation.** Fast charging helps, but it doesn't completely compensate for the inconvenience of frequent charging stops and range anxiety.
**Would I recommend it? Absolutely, especially for someone who primarily uses it for daily commuting and has convenient access to home charging.**
For those who frequently travel long distances in extreme weather conditions, I would strongly recommend evaluating real-world highway range rather than relying solely on the advertised EPA figures.
**Bottom line: An excellent car to drive, but the real-world range under challenging conditions leaves room for improvement.**
