Great all-around vehicle
On the whole, I really like the Ioniq 5.
It's very comfortable inside, and surprisingly spacious; my tall father fits well in the backseat, which is a rarity for any vehicle. Everyone who's ridden in it has commented how nice it is. Three adults usually fit well in the backseat.
Almost every button and indicator is where I'd intuitively expect it to be. I like the wireless phone charging pad on the center armrest console; it keeps the phone still while being close at hand.
I haven't used the heat much, but you have to turn it up to over 80 degrees to really get heat, which sometimes ends up making things too warm after a while. I'd prefer to be able to set the temp to e.g. 77 and have it more slowly warm up. Minor issue.
I like that more of the center console controls are buttons than what I saw of the 2024 model. But a lot of the climate control buttons are still touchpads, and they're hard to see in bright light. I wish they were all physical push-buttons. Same with the overhead lights; if I'm trying to turn one of them on at night, it's annoying to fumble around trying to find the touch-sensitive spot.
The adaptive cruise control is pretty nice. I use it a lot on surface streets in addition to highways, and one thing I've found is that you can't really trust it to come to a sharp hard stop, like at a red light when another car is ahead of you. I guess because of the limits of how far ahead the system can look, it doesn't recognize stopped cars until you're uncomfortably close, and it'll still be going rather fast for how little space there is left to come to a complete stop. I've learned that you need to manually hit the brake or disable CC some time before this. Any time you're behind a car that's coming to a stop more slowly, however, it's perfectly fine.
One bigger annoyance with the CC is that the camera watching your eyes sometimes registers false-positive look-aways. My theory is that it has to do with bright light hitting glasses, which I wear. More than a few times, it's chided me to look back at the road when I am already looking there. There's been plenty of times where it was correct that my gaze had drifted, but it's aggravating when you snap your eyes back and it's still tutting that you're looking elsewhere. This has never happened at night, hence the theory that it's light/reflections off glasses. This did get better after a software update earlier in the year, but it still happens on occasion.
The inclusion of the camera is also somewhat creepy if I think about it. I'm guessing it's mandated by federal regulations around higher-capability CC systems like this, but I wish I didn't have a camera recording me all the time.
The blindspot warnings are useful. Sometimes they ping overly-aggressively, like if I'm signalling and merging one lane to the right, and it detects a car two lanes to the right. But it's never outright wrong.
I knew this was the case with basically any EV, but it's got great acceleration, even in Eco Mode. I try not to floor it because of power efficiency reasons, but it's nice to know it can. The mileage is very good for a not-tiny car.
Since a somewhat recent software update, I've noticed that the "average" miles-remaining indicator is off. I understand that it shows best-case on top, worst-case on bottom, and then the most-likely estimate bigger than the other two in the middle. But the "average" estimator is now always right around the best-case, sometimes even a few miles above that; I've seen the top estimate be e.g. 350 miles, and then the "average" estimate be like 353. I assume this is some software bug, and it's not a big deal; the charge-remaining indicator seems to be accurate, and I haven't gone so far that I can't make it back home to charge.
I wish the cargo net in the trunk stretched more, and/or that there were some higher-up attachments for it. It seems to only be useful for securing low-lying items; there are taller things I've wanted to prevent from moving around more, but the options with the included net and points don't make that possible.
I don't love the angular look of the exterior, but I've gotten used to it. It's not Cybertruck or original Scion xB ugly.
The frunk is uselessly small.
I haven't had issues with the ICCU, but it is worrying that the car could just stop charging, or stop being able to accelerate, at any time.
