The Hyundai Prius

The exterior offers a sleeker, more sporty alternative to Toyota's Prius. The extras with the infotainment system, alloy wheels at base price are a nice touch. Where this vehicle really stumbles is in its poor uphill drive and highway performance. The engine feels like it really struggles to keep up with the flow of traffic if any elevation changes are experienced; even when holding the gas pedal steady, the vehicle loses steam and can really begin to bottom out, requiring the driver to press much harder than is comfortable to maintain speed. Great freshman attempt at a Prius hybrid fleet, but Hyundai needs to do better.

I had wished for more

The Ioniq does handle better than my Prius does but I think the ride is a lot rougher and the overall mileage is about the same as the Prius. It certainly is a better looking car but I am worried about it being dependable as I have heard some strange noises coming out of it already. I sure do not see many of them on the road.

Not as effective

The car is not as effective as stated. About 60 MPG during summer time. During winter, It gives less than 50 MPG I am assuming because the heat is on because the dealers said nothing is wrong with the car and my driving style has not changed.

Great MPG, unless it’s Cold

A great car, performs as expected until it gets below freezing. Using the heat greatly reduced MPG, up to 30MPG due to the engine running more than it should to provide waste heat to the interior cabin. It is strong reccomend you use the ‘auto’ climate control button to try and mitigate the drop in MPG. Simply setting the heat on ‘high’ is extremely detrimental.

The Ioniq is underwhelming

The car has a cute look and is purported to be the hybrid with the best mpg in the US, but I've found this is not the case in my experience. The car is a little cumbersome and uncomfortable. The power is lacking, which would be okay if the gas mileage was A+, but it isn't.

Hmm

Not getting the milage advertised although I am a very conservative driver. On first service interval needed a 4 wheel alignment. A lot of blind spots really needs the proximity detectors. Had to get in and out for a person over 5'10".

Did I get a Lemon?

When I first saw the Ionic I really liked it. When I drove it it was as good as I expected. The dealership in Concord CA was OK. The car was a “used” car with 485 miles on it. I was told it was returned because the client wanted a bigger vehicle. Turns out it was returned but still claimed for the tax break. A scam? I was told all warranties were in place and that the tax break would be mine. So far all is he issues I’ve had have been covered under warranty, but here I sit for the second time without my car or a loaner due to the coolant leaking out in less than 2 days. It all started with the transmission motor recall that I was not informed of until I took the car in for it’s 7500 mile service. The car was sold to me without a front license plate holder and when I took it back to ask about it I was told I would have to pay for the holder as well as the installation! California requires a front and rear license plate so I would think Hyundai would provide it. As I sit without a car I bought with 485 miles on it I have to wonder if the dealership scammed me.

The good, Bad, and not really Ugly. You want 200 characters? Why? I just wrote a novel doing this survey and when I got to the final pages it does not even have my car listed. So all my work was done for a car that I cannot select because this survey company does not update the selection. Go figure?

Cautiously optimistic

I bought this car because of the mpg ratings, the factory warranty and 0% financing offer. I've been driving a VW TDI for many years and loved it, but they are no longer sold new in the US because of the emissions scandal. I researched and test drove many cars. The Ioniq had good ratings and the mileage was always a big plus. I've had the car for a few months and it's nice. But, there are some serious shortcomings with the car in MN winters that has soured my view. Now that spring is creeping in, the memories of the problems will hopefully be replaced with good points. But, we'll see.

Good overall car, poor mileage and some brake flaws

Car is good overall and I am happy with the way that it looks and drives overall. The worst aspect is that I am only getting 45 mpg and was hoping for 55. I live in a cold climate and that is probably why, but I wish the dealers were more honest about that BEFORE I bought the car. After calling in a couple times AFTER I bought it they were very upfront about it, it seems a bit dishonest to not mention this before the purchase. The brakes grind I will probably bring that in for a check up. Also at slow speeds and in reverse the car does not sound or seem smooth at all.

Software

The Blue Link only works in the US. As I have to travel to Canada at least 3 times a week the system is worthlessness there. Why have it if notifications cannot happen if needed. Also the Audio system locks up continuously and resetting doesn’t work. Basically I wouldn’t purchase this or any Hyundai until this is remedied.

Software is not as expected. Locks up many times when in Canada and Blue Link/Google feature never work there. I have family there so I go at least 3 times a week. have to reboot audio/navigation system or wait for it to reboot itself. Can take up to 45 minutes for it to reset on it's own.

Average car. not fantastic. Poor dealer knowledge of model. Tires filled with nitrogen from factory, dealers I visited did not have nitrogen.

To begin with, I don't understand the difference between Vehicle Review Title and Vehicle Review Summary, There were several review questions that couldn't be answered properly, because of wording or options.

I have taken it to the shop twice for check engine light. They said it was fixed both times. Has came on at least twice since then but goes back off before I can get back to the shop. Very concerned about future dependability.

Six month review of the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq

In general, I like the car. It looks good, gets great gas mileage and was good value for the money. On the other hand... Two recalls in the first six months, paint is flaking on the rear bumper, gas mileage is good but not as good as advertised, service at the dealership reminds me of going to a used car dealer. I don't believe a word they say.

People on Youtube who write about the 60 70 MPG are not realizing there are two Odometers. When you turn off the car the Odometer may show high mileage for that TRIP only. The car does not get the 58 mpg around town and only after driving a lot of miles on a trip it may get to 58 mpg. It doesn't live up the advertised mileage. They the dealer test it everything is working as designed they say. They don't drive it all the time to see what happens and I don't think I would get the truth anyhow. 8000 miles so far

Excellent mileage but intermittent problems when the weather is hot.

One of the few hybrids that does not have a CVT transmission. Drives better IMHO, than a Prius. Has returned upwards of 65 mpg on long highway trips averaging 70 mph. Typically can easily average 55 mpg in mixed conditions. What has let this car down is the intermittent problem of the hybrid system not starting when temps are hotter than 90-95 degrees F. The car will drive on the gas engine alone, but there is no power to ANY electrical system—no turn signals, no lights, would not recommend driving on the street if the hybrid system is not fully powered up. Once cooled, car powers up as normal. So far, 4 instances in 14,000 miles with the dealer unable duplicate the problem, nor any known fix.

I've never received any feedback on my complaint about poor gas milage . avg. about 45-48 mpg . should be in low to mid 50 mpg . :( . there is a slight hesitation when accelerating quickly to get into traffic. :(
