Starter

My vehicle is running great. Always taking me from point b to point a. I’ve had my car for 3 years with no issues till now. Replaced the starter, once replaced its running great. Would recommend the vehicle.

No major issues but many cosmetic issues.

So far no major repairs have been needed on my 2009 Sonata but many cosmetic issues. The dash cracked radio stopped working but had always gotten very hot when a cd played. 2 door handles broke. The clasp on the middle console broke. The gas tank door no longer opens and a window stopped working. It is an old car but has been good to me as far as it running me place to place. Has been across country several times.

A great car

The car had been an Enterprise rent vehicle. I purchased in 2010. Currently at 198,000 miles, the only maintenance has been routine. At 180,000 miles I ordered every maintenance item in the back of the owner’s manual to be accomplished. Most items are check and repair/replace as needed. The only thing needed was a radiator flush and new spark plugs. It drives straight almost hands off. The ride is smooth. Acceleration is good. Tires wear evenly. Brakes are original and good. It uses no oil. I use Mobil 10,000 mile oil and a high end oil filter. Belts and hoses are original and pass inspection. The seat covers are worn from hard use and from my canine co pilot. But everything works , radio, blinkers, wipers, all lights, A/C and heater. The auto transmission is so smooth you really have to listen to hear the shifting. It is a great car, reliable, good ride, economical, 30 miles per gallon. I would gladly drive another Hyundai Sonata.

Hyundai Vehicle Positive Review

Own a 2009 Hyundai Sonata V6 and a 2002.Hyundai Elantra GT. Have had no major issues with either vehicle. Hyundai has good products and they stand behind their 100, 000 mile warranty on their vehicles.

An average vehicle with initial cost a gret value.

Have been satisfied overall but very disappointed that neither Hyundai or dealer would take care of a chronic NAV failure replacement. Four failures are more than a warranty labor and materials situation. Four failures is totally unreasonable and I believe the units have latent defects and are unfit for intended purpose. We had planned to replace my wife's Acura TL with an Azera but certainly are now opting for a Lexus.

Average in the long run

The repairs I've paid beyond the warranty makes me wish I purchased as Honda, as I'd most likely see less of the 'average' quality issues and weird engine/starter/etc. issues. For example - a starter should be covered for 10 years, if it fails at 5 that is poor quality to me. And for a car to become stuck in drive, with no way to turn it off (other than a manual override) - that is either poor design or poor quality. Even though that was covered under the warranty; it is a hassle every time something goes wrong. And the dealer refuses to provide a loaner car, which should be a free service - period. I feel I've spent more on this car with repairs, than would have if I bought Honda that cost 2,500-3,000 more.

Should have bought an AWD (all wheel drive) Tucson instead.

This car isn't exactly suitable for Alaskan climate. For example, last week I got stuck twice in the parking lot and at the intercession because of few inches of snow. Other than that, in the summer time it does drive very smoothly and makes good tight turns. It's a fun car to drive. Keep in mind that you'll have to ship wheels and tires from lower 48 states up to Alaska. To buy wheels directly from Hyundai store will be about 4 times more expensive than what you would pay for on the Amazon Prime (free shipping).

Buy it if you need reliable

I like my Sonata but wish I has added a few extras just to make it easier and added comfort. I like the programmable doors that keep me from locking my keys in the car while they're in the ignition. I like that the program also let's me unlock the driver door, unlock again is the passenger door, and the third click will unlock the back doors.

2009 Sonata

The vehicle is well built, drives very solid and has held up well to Wisconsin's winters. It has had quite a few electronic issues , including a bad ECU. I feel a car that has less than 100,000 miles should not have as many electronic issues as it's had. Over all the car has performed very well.

WELL ABOUT A USED AND OLD ONE WHICH MIGHT NOT SPEAK A =BOUT A STANDARD SONATA. SO, I HOPE MY COMMENT WOULD NOT BE TAKEN AS A STANDARD ONE. HOWEVER, FROM WHAT I OBSERVED, DRIVING THE CAR FOR MORE THAN A MONTH, ITS A KIND OF AVERAGE ONE.

I have been disappointed in the mechanical aspects of this automobile, brakes, starter, etc.

I bought the car on the recommendation of Consumers Report. I even bought extended coverage and have found out that that coverage only applies to mainentance repairs. You would think that a car that has less than 50.000 miles would be more reliable .

Ratings are based on reoccurring issues with breaks - wear and maintenance.

This has been a solid vehicle except when it comes to break issues. Both front and rear breaks. I feel there are design flaws in the break design that allows for more that normal wear. I have a 2007, 2008 and 2009 Sonata and have similar issues with all three vehicles. The calipers have stuck on numerous occasions that have caused the break pads to wear out. Sometimes to the point that it is metal on metal before you know there is a problem. Other than that I have just had to do routine maintenance.

Expected More

This vehicle has had many problems not covered under warranty since I got it. Service at Hyundai dealers is very expensive. The 10 year warranty covers relatively little. Electrical system and brake-related faults are frequent. Car is not very fuel efficient in the city.

Paint

A 2009 car paint should not be peeling off and causing the car to rust.The car paint job apparently was not done correctly when it was made.

so far I had to bring the car in for a starter and twice because the electric windows stopped working. Not good. My Ford that I owned for 12 years never needed a repair.

Recurring brake issue

Brake caliper is seized every three years costing more than $700. No way to prevent it even with regular maintenance checkups. It's nonsense but neither Hyundai motors nor dealership cares. Not buying Hyundai anymore

I regret to purchase Hundai

I wasted too much money to fix many problems for past 8 years. My friends who bought Camry or Accord at the same time doesn’t have any problems though. I recommend leasing Hyundai rather than purchasing.

09 Sonata

This is my second vehicle purchase from the Hyundai dealership on Coors Blvd. Both times I have dealt with Jen Martinez and Dan Yamamoto. Jen's honesty speaks volumes and ensures a person's trust in her. Dan's tenacity in ensuring that he find you exactly what you are looking for in a car ensures a person's loyalty in him.
