1st Time Buyer
Being a loyal Volkswagen customer for many years, I decided to switch brands following the diesel issue. Family members had been pleased with their Hyundai vehicles, so I decided to lean in this direction and purchased a 2018 Sonata Limited. To date, I have been pleased with my decision. I chose the Lakeside Blue color which presents itself nicely, particularly in bright sunlight. The car is well appointed for the price although Hyundai does charge extra for some safety accessories that are standard on other vehicles. I particularly like the heated and ventilated seats as well as the heated steering wheel. A frequent highway driver, I have put nearly 35,000 miles on the vehicle over the last nine months. City Driving in the Sonata presents less-than-stellar MPG compared to the smaller Volkswagen I had. On the highway however, it is a different story. I often make weekend trips approximating 200 miles. Driving on relatively flat terrain and at posted speed limits, I have been able to average up to 42 MPG on the highway which I find excellent for the large normally aspirated 4-cylinder engine. Issues with a vehicle have been limited to date. The headlights were adjusted for projection height. A defective front speaker was replaced under warranty. A transmission issue where the vehicle would tend to buck as you slowed toward first gear was also corrected by reprogramming under warranty. Fit and finish is good but not excellent. I noticed a minor inconsistency between left and right front quarter panel fit as well as the gasket which seals the hood. Some suggestions that Hyundai might consider for future Sonatas would include snug beverage holders, replacing one of the 12 volt front outlets with a high speed USB connection, one touch up and down for all four windows and the ability to vent or close the windows from outside as found on my previously owned and less expensive Volkswagen Jetta. For additional safety, I would redesign/reposition the rear backup camera which tends to get dirty easy and add front parking sensors to make maneuvering in tight places easier. Overall, I would consider Hyundai once again for future vehicle purchase consideration.
